Softball Drops Tough Doubleheader to Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split fell in both games of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Gardner-Webb with final scores of 7-9 and 1-9.

Game 1
The Highlanders got off to an electric start in Saturday's opener as the team jumped out to a six-run lead. Starting pitcher Chloe Greene worked around a pair of two-out singles to toss a scoreless first before Radford got its first run in the bottom half.

Lexie Roberts, who reached base in every plate attempt of game one, got things going with a single up the middle. She proceeded to steal second and third allowing Cassi Barbato to hit a sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead. After another scoreless frame by Greene, Radford added on in bunches in the second.

Abby Wilson immediately set the tone muscling a homer to center to extend the lead to 2-0. After two straight outs, Radford's offense refused to quit. Emily Smith and Amanda Lee both drew walks and a Roberts hit by pitch loaded the bases. Barbato collected two more RBI with a single to center and Kari Shedrick also doubled to score two more and make it a 6-0 lead.

From there, however, the Runnin' Bulldogs quickly struck back. In the third the visitors struck for four runs capped by a three-run homer to make it a 6-4 game. In the fourth, the game was tied thanks to a pair of runs scored with the bases loaded and just one out.

After Morgan Cooper limited the damage and kept things tied, Radford got back out front in the bottom of the fourth. Roberts collected the 100th hit of her career in stylish fashion tripling to left. With two outs, Barbato struck for her fourth RBI of the day with a single to left to put Radford ahead 7-6.

Gardner-Webb responded in-kind with a two-out RBI single that knotted the game back up at seven-all. Solo home runs in the sixth and seventh would put Gardner-Webb up for good in a 9-7 final.

Game 2
In the Highlanders' second game, one bad inning spelled doom for the Highlanders in the shortened contest. After both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings, a stark contrast to the offensive affair in game one, Gardner-Webb struck in the fourth.

The Runnin' Bulldogs piled on seven runs in the fourth before Ellen Palya was able to come in and collect two straight outs. Barbato responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, but two more runs in the fifth allowed Gardner-Webb to seal the series win with a 9-1 victory in five innings.
