Sixth Inning Offensive Explosion Nets Softball Sunday Victory over Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program bounced back with a run-rule victory over Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon as the team rallied from behind and scored eight runs in the sixth to down the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-5.

Needing a rebound after a tough doubleheader Saturday, the Highlanders dug deep despite facing adversity early in the contest. The Runnin' Bulldogs plated three runs in the opening inning to quickly go up 3-0.

Radford quickly responded, however, scoring a run in the bottom half. Lexie Roberts continued her blistering hot hitting as of late with a leadoff single. After Kari Shedrick singled her to third, Roberts was able to come home on a double steal to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Chloe Greene rebounded in the second inning and set the tone for the rest of the game retiring three straight batters. An error would allow a run to score in the third, but Radford would once again respond by stringing together multiple hits to tie the game up in the bottom half.

Roberts once again started the offense with a single advancing to second on a ground out. Shedrick doubled to score Roberts and Rachel Smith followed her with a triple to make it a 4-3 game. Marking the Highlanders' third straight extra base hit was Abby Wilson who double in R. Smith to tie the game at four-all.

After two straight hits opened the fourth, Greene buckled down and retired three straight batters to keep the damage to one run. Her offense picked her up once again in the bottom half as a Cassi Barbato sacrifice fly scored Emily Smith.

Tied at five-all, both Radford and Gardner-Webb were held scoreless in the fifth inning. Greene kept rolling, stranding a two-out hit in the sixth to keep things tied. From there, the offense would do the rest of the heavy lifting to seal the eventual win.

The eight-run sixth inning began with E. Smith drawing a hit by pitch and Roberts also drawing a walk. Barbato struck for a towering fly ball to center that popped out of the center fielder's mitt and scraped the fence loading the bases with one out.

Shedrick delivered the biggest hit of the day as she stroked a two-strike double to left center that gave Radford its first lead at 7-5. R. Smith walked to reload the bases and a crucial error by the Runnin' Bulldogs allowed a run to score and keep the bases loaded with one out.

Tori Boyd delivered a back-breaking single to left to score two more runs making it a 10-5 lead. Now searching for a run-rule victory, the Highlanders kept working. Emma Yates would load the bases once again with E. Smith walking in a run to make it 11-5 Radford. Amber Wolfe got a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly making it 12-5 and it was Roberts who capped off the 13-5 run-rule win with an RBI single.

Roberts finished with an incredible weekend performance which saw her 100th career hit in yesterday's doubleheader. The sophomore hit an incredible 7-9 (.777 batting average) from the plate scoring six runs with four stolen bases over the three-game series.
