Pitching Shines in Softball’s Doubleheader Sweep Over Western Carolina

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program picked up their second doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday afternoon with two tight victories over Western Carolina thanks to some stellar pitching.

Game 1
In the first game of the day one run was all it would take for the Highlanders to claim victory. Malorie Reeves started the game for Radford and navigated through trouble all game to keep the Catamounts scoreless.

After a clean first frame, Western Carolina loaded the bases with none out in the second off a hit, error and hit by pitch. Nobody else would reach base as Reeves forced a fielder's choice, strikeout and ground out to end the threat.

In the top of the third, Western Carolina tried to scratch across their first run after a double, but Radford got the runner out at the plate thanks to a relay from Emily Smith to Amanda Lee to Amber Wolfe.

Once again in the fourth, the Catamounts loaded the bases with none out. Reeves would finish her day with a strikeout, but Abby Peace would enter to try and end the threat. Peace did just that, forcing a fielder's choice and strikeout to keep things scoreless.

In the fifth, Western Carolina would load the bases yet again but this time with one out already in the inning. Peace wouldn't falter, as the Radford defense backed her up with a double play to end the inning. Radford got its first two hits in the bottom half from Wolfe and Abby Bossler, but the team wasn't able to score.

After a clean sixth by Peace, the offense finally backed up the pitching and defense striking for a run in the bottom half. With two outs, Natalie Jones drew a critical walk that put runners at first and second. Lee got another big two-out RBI as she singled to right to give Radford the slim 1-0 lead.

Now with a lead, Peace preserved it with ease as she retired three straight Catamounts to seal the 1-0 victory. While the Catamounts tallied nine hits, drew two walks and one hit by pitch, Radford's pitching dug deep to toss their third shutout of the season.

Game 2
The second game of the evening featured another pitcher's duel between the two squads as both teams were held to just a few runs until another late clutch hit by Radford. This time it was Chloe Greene who got the start and she also did a great job pitching out of trouble to keep the game close.

Greene picked up a strikeout in the first inning and tossed a perfect second inning to keep the Catamounts scoreless early. After the Catamounts got a runner to third with two outs in the third, Greene didn't falter, enforcing a fly out that kept the game tied at 0-0.

In the bottom of the third, Radford struck for its first long shot of the game. Rachel Smith wasted no time leading the offensive half with a rope to right center that stayed up high enough to sneak over the fence for the 1-0 lead.

Greene would toss another scoreless frame in the fourth before the Catamounts finally broke through for a run in the fifth. Four of the first five Catamounts batters in the inning all recorded singles to allow for a 1-0 lead. After Greene took a come-backer that R. Smith was able to pick up and fire home for the out, she showed strength returning to the circle to get a strikeout and keep the game tied with the bases loaded.

Ellen Palya would enter in the next frame to pitch, and she continued the dominant streak. After a walk, she forced three straight outs to allow for the offense to strike once again in the sixth inning.

Taylor Breidt led off the inning with an elite pinch-hitting performance drawing a 12 pitch at bat before singling to second base to set up Abby Wilson. Wilson needed to see just one pitch before she launched a no doubt homer to dead center to give Radford a 3-1 lead, their biggest of the day.

The two-run lead was more than enough breathing room for Palya who retired three straight in the seventh sealing the win. The Highlanders move to 10-9 overall on the season with the two wins today and a 4-1 record on the home field.
