Barbato’s Big Day at Plate Leads Radford to Doubleheader Split

HARRISONBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program split their first day of games at James Madison's tournament Friday night dropping their first contest to the hosts before rebounding with a dominant 8-0 victory over Saint Joseph's.

Game 1
A pair of bad innings would put Radford in a hole too big to dig out of in the first game against James Madison. The Dukes piled things on early, scoring seven runs over the first two frames. After that, Abby Peace would enter and hold James Madison to just one run over the final four innings.

Radford had a few base runners through the first two frames but wasn't able to strike until the third inning. After two straight outs to start the inning, Abby Wilson doubled to keep things alive. Cassi Barbato singled after that earning her first of many RBI on the night.

Down 7-1, Radford kept chipping away, adding on another run in the fifth. Taylor Breidt and Wilson both drew walks setting up Barbato to collect once again a two-out hit that scored Breidt and make things 7-2.

The offense would be held hitless over the final two frames and the Dukes scratched across one more run to defend their home turf in the 8-2 final.

Game 2
In game two, the Highlanders would waste no time shaking off the previous result and striking first for an early lead. The first three Highlanders reached base via singles including an RBI single by Barbato, her third of the day to put Radford up 1-0.

Rachel Smith would draw a walk to load the bases with none out, but a double play wiped the inning leaving Radford with just the 1-0 advantage. Morgan Cooper, the starting pitcher for the game, held the advantage with three straight outs in the bottom half.

Radford's offense went right back to work in the second as Kari Shedrick immediately doubled.  A sacrifice fly by Lexie Roberts gave Radford the 2-0 lead. Wilson and Barbato would walk to reload the bases and R. Smith would draw a third straight walk to move things to 3-0.

An Abby Bossler single up the middle would score two more runners pushing the lead further to 5-0. Breidt would complete the inning with yet another two-out hit to score R. Smith for the 6-0 lead through just an inning and a half.

With a substantial lead, Cooper went back to work and held the Hawks to just a hit and no runs in the second. Radford would add another run in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Barbato for her fourth RBI of the day. Cooper dialed up a scoreless third and fourth allowing the offense to move into mercy rule range in the fifth.

Barbato would double after Wilson drew a walk for her fifth RBI, capping a great day at the plate. Leading 8-0, Cooper worked with ease for another scoreless frame to complete the 8-0 final.
