STATESBORO, Ga. - The Radford Baseball program dropped a close series opener 5-4 against Georgia Southern on Friday evening at J.I. Clements Stadium.Ā

The first two innings of tonight's contest was a pitchers' duel as each side struggled to get anything going in the first two innings. Scott Rouse had an impressive start that would see him retiring the side in the first and in the second would strike out two batters and later retire another to leave the Eagles hitless in the two frames.Ā

In the third the Highlanders would get on the board first after a sacrifice bunt by Conner Butler that would drive in Hunter Keen to give the Highlanders the 1-0Ā lead. In the bottom of the inning the Eagles tied itĀ back up before heading to the fourth.Ā

For the fourth Georgia Southern would add one run to take theĀ lead. However, the Highlanders would respond in the top of the fifth after Jhonkeanu Perez homered down the left field line that would bringĀ Breckin NaceĀ andĀ himselfĀ to home plate toĀ regain the Highlander lead at 3-2 heading to the sixth.Ā

The pitchers' duel would resumeĀ in the sixth and would last all the way to the end of theĀ eighth. Drew Stanley would come in for Rouse at the bottomĀ of the sixth and would only allow two hits and record five strikeouts during the innings he pitched.Ā For the final inning of tonight's contest, the Highlanders would add another run to their lead after Perez singled to first base that would allow Keen to reach home plate once more. However,Ā the Eagles would also add three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to edge out the Highlanders 5-4.Ā
