Gleason Earns 100th Goal in Dominating Win Against Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Continuing their road trip, Radford women's lacrosse came out victorious 22-6 against Howard Saturday morning. Margaret Gleason earned her 100th goal almost immediately, totaling seven goals during the game.

Mady Cheney got the scoring started for the Highlanders, the first of many goals during the game. Less than 30 seconds later came the second goal. Gleason took advantage of the free position and found the back of the net for the 100th time in her collegiate career. Howard was able to run the ball and shorten the gap to 3-2. However, freshman Piper Galbraith was not ready to let the lead go. She caused a turnover, scooped up the ground ball and earned her first goal. Linley Tirrell was next for the Highlanders, extending the lead to 5-2.

Radford did not slow down in the second quarter as Erica Lawrence used the man-up and free position opportunity to put the Highlanders up by four. Shortly after, Ashlyn Grogan put her name on the scoring list, and earned a milestone of 100 points. Cheney earned her hat trick during the period with back-to-back goals, seconds apart.

Reece Morrish earned her first goal of the 2024 season after Josie Helpard picked up a ground ball off a save from Olivia Hunter. With all her goals in the second quarter, Morrish earned herself a hat trick. She closed out the first half putting the Highlanders up 15-4.

During the third quarter, Kaitlyn Lytton saw an opening pass to Molly O'Brien who found the back of the net during Radford's man-up opportunity. In the final quarter, Gleason had her final goal of the game, tying her single-game career high of seven goals. This was not Gleason's only milestone of the game. She also joined the 100 club in draw controls. Radford took advantage of draw controls, using these wins to create crucial plays. Hannah Hanger won a draw control that led to Madison Driscoll's first collegiate goal putting the score at 21-4, leaving the Bisons scoreless since the third quarter. However, Howard fought their way towards two more goals, but this did not slow down the Highlanders. Last to score of the game was Gabby DiRenno, the third freshman to earn her first collegiate goal.

This game was not all offense as Radford's defense shined with seven caused turnovers, each from a different Highlander. Cheney led the team in groundballs with five, while Hanger picked up four.
