Smith Powers Highlanders Offense in Doubleheader Split at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader with Longwood Saturday afternoon as the team took a 5-3 victory in game one before falling 6-0 in the second contest.

Game 1
Timely hitting and strong pitching highlighted the Highlanders' first game of the doubleheader. Chloe Greene started in the circle looking to continue her recent success in conference play and did just that.

Through the first inning, neither offense was able to get anything going as the first 12 batters of the game were all retired. In the top of the third, Abby Bossler broke that streak at 13 batters by drawing a walk and stealing second. With two outs, Lexie Roberts had Radford's first timely hit with a triple for the 1-0 lead.

In the third, Longwood saw its first baserunners of the day via two hits, but Greene worked through the jam with two on to keep the Lancers scoreless. After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings by both teams, Radford again struck in the sixth.

Roberts continued her impressive conference hitting with another infield single advancing to second on a throwing error. Cassi Barbato would single her home to make it 2-0 Radford. Kari Shedrick would draw a walk, and Radford's loudest hit of the game came from Rachel Smith who slugged her seventh homer of the year to make it 5-0 Radford.

Greene would toss a scoreless sixth before the Lancers started a rally in the seventh. The first four Lancers would all reach base to pull the game at a 5-1 score. From there, Greene buckled down and retired three straight Lancers to secure a 5-3 final and a win in the series opener.

Game 2
In the second game of the evening, the Highlanders weren't able to get the bats moving resulting in the shutout loss.

To open the game, Shedrick continued her strong day at the plate with a two-out single to left. She was stranded there and in the bottom of the first Abby Peace
worked around two runners in scoring position to keep things at 0-0.

The Highlanders would rally to load the bases in the second inning thanks to hits from Amber Wolfe, Abby Bossler and a hit by pitch by Tori Boyd. With two outs already in the frame, though, the Highlanders were once again held scoreless.

In the bottom of the second the Lancers responded to take their first lead of the series scoring a pair of runs to go up 2-0. Shedrick would pick up another hit in the third, but from there Radford's offense was held quiet. The Lancers would add four more runs to their lead before eventually sealing the 6-0 final, evening the weekend series.
