Highlanders Drop Close Series Opener to Longwood

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team dropped the final series opener of the season with a final score of 7-6 to Longwood on Thursday night at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.

The Highlanders would open the scoring in the first inning of the series opener. A fielder's choice for Carson Bell to reach first would bring home Hunter Keen for the first run of the game. A throwing error by the Longwood pitcher opened the door for Zack Whitacre to stroll on home and give the Highlanders a two-run lead. However, in the top of the second inning, Longwood would put up four runs to have a 4-2 lead over the Highlanders.

Radford would respond with three runs in the bottom of the same inning to retake the lead. Cameron Pittman would single to right center to drive in Brady Whitacre and cut the Longwood lead to one. Keen would immediately follow up with a double down the right field line to bring in Pittman for the game-tying run. The Highlanders would reclaim the lead after Zack Whitacre would double to left center to finally bring Keen home and make it a 5-4 game heading into the third.

Longwood would hit a solo shot homerun to left field in the third inning to tie it back up at five apiece. The Lancers would hit a solo shot home run to right center in the sixth to take the lead at 6-5.

The Highlanders would tie up the game once more after Carson Bell would lead off with a double down the right field line and be brought home by a single to center field courtesy of Jhonkeanu Perez. Longwood would hit another solo shot home run in the top of the eighth to reclaim the lead. The Highlanders would search for a potential game-tying run but would come up just short and see Longwood take the series opener at 7-6 in the final homestand of the 2024 season.
