Offense Stays Hot in Doubleheader Split with Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their conference doubleheader with Presbyterian Friday night taking the first contest in a 7-1 final before falling in game two 8-4.

Game 1
Thanks to a strong pitching effort by Chloe Greene and her offense backing her up with some big swings for seven runs, Radford was able to start the day decisively. Greene allowed no earned runs in the contest, tallying four strikeouts along the way standing seven base runners.

In the first, the Blue Hose got their first runner in scoring position, but Greene quickly stranded them there. Radford also got a runner to second in the bottom of the first, but with two outs she was also stranded.

A one-out double moved to third on a wild pitch to start the second, but Greene buckled down and retired two straight to escape the jam. The third inning featured the first three-up, three-down frame of the day as Greene retired three straight. In the bottom half of the third, the offense finally caught fire.

After Lexie Roberts tripled, Radford had two outs in the inning which threatened to keep things scoreless again. Kari Shedrick drew a walk, and it was Rachel Smith with the swing that broke the ice singling home Roberts for the 1-0 lead. Abby Wilson followed by just missing a home run with a double that struck the top of the fence, scoring two more for a 3-0 lead. After a wild pitch, Radford led 4-0.

Greene tossed scoreless fourth and fifth innings to keep things flowing Radford's way. In the bottom of the fifth, Radford added more as Shedrick hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season to extend the lead to 6-0. An RBI single by RBI Amber Wolfe made it a 7-0 lead, allowing Radford to coast over the final two innings for the 7-1 final.

Game 2
In the Highlanders' second game, one rough inning would spell doom for the team as the Blue Hose used a six-run fourth to fuel the eventual final.

Both teams were held scoreless despite scoring opportunities through the first two innings, but once again it was Radford who broke through in the third. With two outs, Shedrick came up big once again with a single that scored Grace Bechtol for a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived, however, as Presbyterian had their biggest inning of the day in the fourth. After some misplays, untimely walks, and a home run given up Presbyterian had stretched their new lead all the way to 6-1.

Radford wouldn't go away quietly. Right away in the bottom of the fourth, Cassi Barbato tried to get her team going with a lead off homer to make it 6-2. After Emma Yates got an infield single and moved to second off an error, Radford cashed in thanks to an RBI single by Abby Bossler to make it 6-3.

Ellen Palya, who entered in relief, kept Radford right in it throughout the latter half of the game. She dialed up dominant fifth and sixth innings to keep the Blue Hose off the board.

An RBI single by Yates in the fifth would pull things as close as 6-4, but Presbyterian eventually pulled away to seal up the 8-4 final.
