Volleyball Cruises in 3-0 Sweep Over Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball program used some late surges in each of their three sets in a 3-0 sweep over Presbyterian Friday afternoon to kick off homecoming weekend.

KEY STATS
  • Three Highlanders finished in double figures kills including Rylee Sloss (11), Katrina Miller (10) and Olivia Ryno (11).
  • Thanks to a big second set on the serve, Radford tallied five aces in the match with Lea Gage tallying three.
  • Miranda Howard's 21 digs were her most in a three-set affair this season.
  • After being out-hit in the first two sets, Radford tightened things up in set three holding the Blue Hose to a negative attack percentage.

PLAY BY PLAY
As was the case for most of the afternoon, set one went back and forth as both squads looked to set the tone. Radford's offense worked through a team-effort as the first six kills of the match came from six different Highlanders.

Tied at 12-12, Radford got its first run 3-0 through a Presbyterian timeout to take a 15-12 lead. Ryno provided two kills in the small run and came out the other end with another kill to keep Radford up 16-14. Looking to hold on late, Radford came out of a timeout up 23-22 scoring the last two points off Blue Hose miscues to take set one 25-22.

Radford was forced to play down early in set two as Presbyterian came out with a 6-1 run to start the set. Out of a timeout, Radford came out with renewed energy. Ryno and Sierra Moore combined for kills to end the Blue Hose run while Miller added two more to trail just 9-6.

The Highlanders would continue to rally but weren't able to catch the lead as the set ran late. Down 20-18, an ace by Gage and kill from Sloss would tie the set back up. Serving would be crucial down the stretch as a four-point swing that included three aces of the serve helped fuel the comeback. Tied 22-22, Radford once again rallied at the end scoring three straight points thanks to kills from Sloss and Ryno to take set two 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Despite the close finish, set three saw the Highlanders' most dominant effort of the day. The Highlanders would thrive off Presbyterian miscues. Taryn Roberts came alive as well, supplying kills and blocks that gave Radford a 9-6 edge early.

Tied at 13-13, Radford went on their biggest run of the day. A kill by Ryno and solo block from Roberts helped Radford stay hot through a media timeout to go up 17-13. Roberts and Ryno combined again for a pair of kills that paced Radford ahead. Out of a Blue Hose timeout, the visitors recorded back-to-back errors that gave Radford a commanding 22-15 lead.

Presbyterian wouldn't go away quietly using a 5-1 run that quickly tightened the set back up at 23-20. Radford didn't waver, holding on to secure the final two points that came from Sloss kills to take set three 25-21 and the match 3-0.
