Short’s Brace Lifts Women’s Soccer Past High Point

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program continued their Big South conference success, taking their fifth straight conference win thanks to a pair of second half goals by Lilly Short in a 2-1 triumph over High Point on Wednesday night.

KEY STATS
  • Short's brace was the second of her career at Radford, with the previous coming last season versus South Carolina State.
  • Radford outshot the Panthers 14-13, including eight shots in the first half and five on goal in total.
  • Jillian Silverstone added her first assist of the season and Ava Kertgate her second, respectively.
  • Radford's five-game Big South winning streak is their longest since winning eight in a row in 2013.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders were the aggressors out of the gates, logging several shots along the edge of the box early. Paige Olson had several great looks at goal, including a shot in the 33rd minute that bounced off the cross bar. However, the home side would go into the locker room still scoreless at the break.

It would not take long for Radford to take the lead in the second half. A foul in the attacking half gave Silverstone a chance to lob a brilliant ball into the box. Short lept with a header that bounced across the goal and found the lower right corner of the net in the 50th minute.

The pressure stayed on for High Point, and this time another set play led to a goal. After High Point seemingly cleared a Radford corner, Kertgate sent a pass in that fell right at Short's feet near the penalty spot. A blast past the keeper gave Radford a multi-score advantage with just over a half hour remaining.

High Point did not go quietly, getting several shots and a goal back in the 88th minute. The Highlanders managed to prevent any more threats in their half after the lone goal allowed in a 2-1 win.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I thought we played very well most of the game tonight," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I was happy with the way we came out of halftime, scored two goals, and had great possession. I was not happy with the end of the game. We gave up a goal on a set piece and didn't finish well. We played really well but we need to make sure we finish the game better."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders head to Winthrop on Saturday, October 18th. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C. on ESPN+.
