Early Deficit Dooms Women’s Soccer at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer team fell behind early and were unable to complete the comeback in a 3-2 loss to Winthrop on Saturday night.

KEY STATS
  • Lilly Short scored her third goal of the week and seventh of the season.
  • Paige Olson's assist to Short was the 27th of her career at Radford. She's tied with Amanda Lebo (1995-98) for the second-most assists in program history.
  • Ashley Loundermon scored her first goal of the season.
  • The loss snaps Radford's five-game conference winning streak. It's their first regular season conference defeat since October 5, 2024, vs. Charleston Southern (2-3).
PLAY BY PLAY
The night did not start the Highlanders way, with Winthrop tallying goals in the fourth and ninth minutes. The physicality turned up near the end of the half, with five fouls being committed (3 by Radford) in the closing moments.

Radford managed to cash in with several opportunities to start the second half. On their third-consecutive corner kick, Short scored with a header on Olson's pass to cut the deficit in half with just over 30 minutes left in regulation. A few moments later, Winthrop added to their lead with their third goal in the 62nd minute.

A host of shots were ripped off in the final minutes by the Highlanders. Loundermon found nylon with a shot into the top right corner of the goal with just over five minutes remaining. However, it was too little too late, as the Eagles held on.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"We started the game with a lack of intensity and urgency, and it cost us," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "A lot of credit to Winthrop. They came out with something to prove and deserved the win. I liked our response in the second half, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole. We have to look forward to a good week of training and rebound for Senior Day on Saturday."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders play their final home match of the regular season next Saturday, October 25 for Senior Day at Cupp Stadium. They'll host Charleston Southern at 2:00 p.m.
