Volleyball Toppled in Road Action at Eagles

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford volleyball program fell to a tough Winthrop squad Friday night 3-1 despite a late rally that helped extend the match.

KEY STATS
  • Rylee Sloss stayed hot leading the team in kills with 13, her third straight match with double digit kills.
  • Taryn Roberts had a solid hitting night with five kills and just one error.
  • Radford hit just .092 in the match, their second lowest attack percentage in conference play this season.
  • Radford's last three matches in Rock Hill, S.C. have all ended in 3-1 finals.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford got off on the right foot in set one behind back-to-back aces from Gage, but the Eagles stormed back for a commanding lead that held for most of the set. Aces by the Eagles and errors piled up early in the set as Radford fell behind 15-10. Winthrop would stay hot scoring nine of the last 11 points to eventually take set one 25-14.

Some misfires put Radford behind 4-0 early in set two, but a trio of kills from Sloss helped Radford stay close. After a kill by Olivia Ryno made it an 8-7 deficit, Winthrop went on a 6-1 run to reestablish their lead. Winthrop kept firing to a 20-10 lead, which put the set out of reach to eventually claim a 2-0 lead.

In set three Radford would try to hang on but was put into an early hole. Winthrop went ahead 7-2, forcing Radford to look for answers. Trailing by as much as six in the set, Radford got its rally sparked by a block from Gabriela Smolenska and Sloss. Kills from Sloss and Sierra Moore followed with Kennedy Robinson lighting up for a pair of kills that forced a Winthrop timeout at 19-18.

While Winthrop came out of their timeout to go back up 20-18, the Highlanders didn't cool off scoring a 5-0 run thanks to more kills from Moore, Robinson and Roberts. Radford survived another late rally, holding on to set three 25-22 to extend the match to set four.

In set four, Radford fell behind 4-0 for a third straight set and was forced to dig early. Moore and Robinson would add more kills, but the Eagles continued to pace ahead by as big as 20-10. A late run behind a kill from Sloss and some misfires from Winthrop wasn't enough, as Radford fell in the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
