CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday afternoon that Olivia Ryno has been named the conference's Freshman of the Week following her incredible showing with 22 kills in a victory over Winthrop last week.
Ryno played a large role in Radford's big 3-2 victory over Winthrop this past weekend, handing the Eagles their first loss of conference play and Radford's first win over Winthrop since 2018. Ryno's 24.5 points in the match led the Highlanders and her 22 kills were a new career high beating her previous high of 16. Attacking at a .386 clip, which led all players in the match, Ryno's efforts helped Radford to their best attack percentage in Big South play so far by over 160 points. In the night prior, she also tallied 13 kills to finish the weekend averaging 4.4 kills per set.
The weekly award is the first for the Highlanders this season and their first weekly award since Sydney Mundkowsky debuted last season with back-to-back appearances on the weekly awards list. Ryno is the first freshman at Radford to earn a weekly award nod since Hailey Flowers did so in 2019.
Radford is currently preparing for their next round of Big South action. This weekend at home celebrating homecoming and Rachel Wiechecki's induction into the Radford Athletics Hall of Fame, the program opens the weekend facing Presbyterian on Friday at 4 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center.
