Highlanders Start Hot, Win Big Over Paladins

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team put together a fantastic first quarter and carried the early advantage to a 68-50 win over Furman on Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.

KEY STATS
  • The Highlanders held Furman to just four points on 2-of-14 shooting in the first quarter.
  • Joi Williams, Angelina Nice, and Georgia Simonsen all reached double figures in scoring.
  • Radford drew 25 fouls and went 17-of-29 from the free throw line, compared to Furman's 8-for-13.
PLAY BY PLAY

Furman entered as one of the top teams per pace in the nation, but it was Radford who raced out to an early lead. Nice scored the Highlanders' first points with a trifecta, and Simonsen added a layup a few minutes later. Both defenses were sturdy, as the score was just 5-0 at the media timeout. Out of the break, Cate Carlson and Williams added buckets to make it 10-0 Radford. Kirah Dandridge and Williams later matched three pointers that pulled the Highlanders lead to 18-4 after 10 minutes. Radford hit four triples while forcing six turnovers out of the gates.

Williams stayed hot, hitting her third three-pointer along with Anaiah Jenkins' three made it 24-4 and forced Furman to take an early timeout in the second. The Paladins responded with a 9-0 run to nearly get within single digits, but some nice scores by Simonsen in the paint and some made free throws grew Radford's lead back out. It was a safe 37-22 lead for the Highlanders after one half.

The physicality stepped up for Furman in the second half, but so too did the foul trouble. An 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter, helped by back-to-back made three-pointers by Carlson and Williams, gave Radford their largest lead at 23 points. The Paladins answered later with some shots made from behind the arc, making it 52-36 through 30 minutes.

Furman nearly got the deficit to single digits but the Highlanders were aggressive and drew fouls early and often in the fourth quarter. Simonsen made her fourth trip to the line of the evening with Radford in the bonus with 7:33 remaining in the game. A late burst of scoring powered by Nice put to rest any chance Furman had of pulling a comeback. The Highlanders made seven of their last eight free throws to pull away with an 18-point win.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE

"Really proud of our ladies tonight," opened Head Coach Mike McGuire at the post game press conference. "Tonight was a great win. I thought the first quarter and the start was awesome. I didn't think we were hesitant. Our team looked aggressive early. I think that set the tone looking at the numbers. That was probably the difference in the game. I think the other thing too was we did execute the game plan pretty well. Their top two scorers had 10 points combined. We were plus 10 on the boards. Which is a huge step after Sunday's game. I think we executed the game plan very well but the start won the game for us."
