Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highlanders' Late Run Not Enough in Loss to St. Bonaventure

CLEVELAND – The Radford women's basketball team (5-4) looked briefly as if they had completed the comeback. Then, a late burst by St. Bonaventure spelled doom for the Highlanders, as Radford lost 55-45 to the Bonnies on Friday afternoon at the Woodling Gymnasium in game two of the CSU Invitational.

KEY STATS
  • Cherish Haywood had a career game, with the freshman scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the loss.
  • The Highlanders struggled from the floor, shooting at a 27.1 percent clip (16-59) and just 12.5 percent from three (3-24).
  • Radford trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before rallying and keeping St. Bonaventure close the rest of the way.
PLAY BY PLAY
It was all Bonnies in the first quarter. The Atlantic 10 squad sunk each of their first three three-pointers to jump out to a 14-4 advantage. Despite a hockey-style line change midway through the chapter, Radford failed to mount much of a comeback on the offensive end. Adelyn Traylor-Walker hit Radford's first trifecta near the end of the first quarter, but St. Bonaventure answered with another to lead 21-8 after one.

Radford's defense stepped up in the second quarter, quashing any hopes St. Bonaventure had of running away. The Highlanders held their opponents to just four points. A late 9-0 run put together in part by Joi Williams' four points, a score by Anna Stromberg, and Haywood's first three-pointer made it 25-19 at halftime.

The struggles for St. Bonaventure continued on the offensive end, highlighted by Cate Carlson taking multiple charges to force turnovers. The Highlanders kept at trying to crack the three-point code but continued to struggle from deep. Despite this, Radford was able to get a little closer, trailing 37-32 after three.

The Bonnies opened the final chapter with a three, but Radford's offense came to life with a 10-0 run that briefly gave the Highlanders the lead. Traylor-Walker cashed a trifecta to get within three, and Carlson's layup the next trip made it 40-39. Haywood then lined up a three-pointer that was pure to give Radford a 42-40 lead with 6:58 remaining. However, the Bonnies got the lead right back on the next trip, converting a four-point play to go back up two. The Highlanders would not get any closer the rest of the way, as the Bonnies pulled away for a 55-45 win.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"I think that's one thing that I love about this team, is that we have a lot of people who can step up on any given day," said Head Coach Mike McGuire postgame. "Today was Cherish. She continues to grow on the offensive end of the floor. She kind of put us back in the game in the first half with her aggressiveness off the dribble. We needed that from somebody. She was willing to make some plays. I think Cherish is going to continue to grow into a really strong two-way player for us. I was really drawn to her defense in high school. I love her growth on the offensive end. I think she has a bright future. Really excited for her."
