Women’s Soccer Upset by High Point in Big South Tournament

MATHEWS, N.C. – After a season that saw the Highlanders take a regular season conference championship, the Radford women's soccer team's season came to an abrupt conclusion on Thursday night, falling to High Point, 2-1, in the Big South Tournament semifinals.

KEY STATS
  • Radford led the shot total 18-8 and shots on goal 7-2.
  • Ashley Loundermon scored her third career Big South Tournament goal.
  • The Highlanders also had eight corner kicks, to High Point's six.
  • High Point has eliminated Radford in the conference tournament in consecutive seasons.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders had several of the first few shots, with many just off target. The best scoring chance came in the 28th minute, as Lilly Short's header hit the crossbar before bounding out for a High Point goal kick. Following a Radford free kick in the attacking half, the Panthers put together a strong counter that led to High Point's first goal. They would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Radford came out patient in the second half, and their strong passing game led to an equalizing goal. Paige Olson worked free on the right side and sent a cross that was stopped by Short. She basically put the ball on a tee for Loundermon, who sent a shot from close range past the High Point goalkeeper to tie things in the 58th minute. Things were only tied for just under three minutes, as High Point's Morgan Wilcox broke free to put the Panthers up 2-1.

The Highlanders weren't done, earning corner kick after corner kick in attempts to re-tie the contest. Ary Oliver came extremely close in the 82nd minute, with a shot from outside the box sailing just above the crossbar. Another shot came by way of Loundermon with five minutes left, but High Point made the save. A last-ditch corner came up short in the final two minutes, as the Panthers were able to hold off the late Radford attack for a spot in the Big South Championship Game.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"It was a disappointing result today," commented Head Coach Ben Sohrabi. "I don't think we played terribly by any stretch, but it wasn't our best performance either. I think we had an incredible opportunity and we didn't make the most of it. Not taking advantage of situations or making crucial mistakes at inopportune times cost us. I want to thank everyone in the Radford athletic department for their support this year. I also want to thank this senior class for their leadership, commitment, dedication, and love of this program. They have had incredible careers including two tournament championships and two regular season championships. Even more importantly, they are great young ladies that will be very successful going forward."
