Radford Bounces Back, Wins Big Over Emory & Henry

Radford, Va. – The Radford Highlanders women's basketball team put together a strong second half to earn a runaway victory over Emory & Henry, 69-36, on Saturday at the Dedmon Center.

KEY STATS
  • With the win, Head Coach Mike McGuire tied Radford Hall of Famer and first women's basketball coach Pat Barrett (1971-84) with 193 career victories.
  • Junior Anaiah Jenkins posted a season-high 11 points to lead the team in her first Radford start.
  • The Highlanders won the rebounding battle 51-43 and outscored the Wasps 15-2 in second chance points.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders never trailed, with Ellie Taylor dropping in the first two points from the free throw line. Joi Williams' efforts played a huge part in the early going, as the point guard drove to the hoop for Radford's first basket, then later forced a steal that led to a Taylor layup midway through the first quarter.

A pair of layups by Jenkins and Williams started Radford's second quarter, extending their lead to double-digits for the first time. Emory & Henry would get the deficit under 10 on occasion, but a clutch Jenkins three in the final minute of the half gave Radford more of a cushion to be up 30-17 at the break.

Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the second half before Radford slowly eased ahead. A quick 7-2 run that included a Kirah Dandridge three, an Adelyn Trayler-Walker layup, and an Angelina Nice bucket pushed Radford's advantage to nearly 20 points.

The Wasps kept within 20 points through three chapters before the Highlanders poured it on late. A 9-0 run to start the final stanza, capped off by some Nice putback buckets and an Ava Sawi score, put things away with seven minutes to go. Anna Chacha got plenty of cheers from the stands, making her first collegiate basket before Radford closed out the 33-point triumph.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"This is a pretty cool moment," commented McGuire in the postgame press conference. "I've been here 12 years, and it's been a life-changing opportunity to be a head coach here. The 193 wins makes me think of all the people. I've worked with great coaches. I've worked with a lot of good players that love basketball. The fact that we've had 193 wins in 12 seasons is just a testament to a lot of people and a lot of hard work and perseverance. Being a student athlete is not easy. We've had some highs; we've had some lows. I just appreciate the administration for trusting me to lead this program. This is a wonderful place."
