Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jenkins Records First Double-Double as Highlanders Power Past Concord

RADFORD, Va. – After a slow start, the Radford women's basketball team (7-6) reached triple digits in a runaway 100-48 win over NCAA Division II Concord (6-4) on Monday night at the Dedmon Center.

KEY STATS
  • Anaiah Jenkins recorded her first double-double, totaling 14 points and 13 rebounds (10 offensive).
  • Leading by 10 at halftime, Radford finished the game on a 56-14 run for a huge win. It was the first time the Highlanders scored 50+ in the second half since doing so on February 18, 2020, vs. Longwood (58).
  • Four players reached double figures, with Joi Williams leading the way with 16.
  • Radford totaled 27 offensive rebounds and 57 total boards, compared to Concord's 29 total. They also outscored the Mountain Lions 72-20 in the paint.
  • The Highlanders shot 60.5% (23-for-38) from the floor in the second half and held Concord to a 17.9% shooting percentage (5-for-28).
PLAY BY PLAY
Things did not go Radford's way in the first quarter. Ellie Taylor briefly put the Highlanders ahead 6-2 out of the gates, but a run by the Mountain Lions made that advantage short lived. Concord hit a couple of three-pointers in a 10-0 run to go ahead 21-14 after one quarter. The Highlanders struggled from behind the arc, going 0-for-8 in the first 10 minutes.

The duo of Jenkins and Kirah Dandridge helped jump start the Highlanders offense with giving their team multiple looks on nearly each possession. Cherish Haywood got the gears moving by converting a layup, foul, and made free throw for a three-point play. Williams also began hitting from behind the arc, and a 14-4 run turned into a 30-10 run. Angelina Nice's three-pointer put Radford ahead by 13 briefly before the Mountain Lions cut the deficit to 10 at halftime.

Concord made the opening basket of the second half, but it was an avalanche of Highlander points after that. Jenkins had a double-double early in the quarter after her 10th offensive rebound of the night. Consecutive drives and layups by Williams and Taylor made it a 20-point game with 6:51 left in the third. A few moments later, Georgia Simonsen and Adelyn Traylor-Walker kept converting great looks to stretch the lead to 30 points. What was a 10-point game was a 76-40 Radford lead after three.

The Highlanders were on a mission for the century mark and just got there. Contributing late were several freshman earning some minutes off the bench. Lindsee Williams added her first collegiate bucket to get Radford to 89 points. Anna Chacha got the Highlanders to 98 with a few minutes left before Simonsen got the team to 100 points with 1:21 left. Despite the emptying of the bench, the Highlanders still held Concord to just eight points in the final chapter.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"I think we needed a game like this," said Head Coach Mike McGuire postgame. "We started slowly, again. That's something we still need to figure out. But I thought we got much better after the first 10 minutes. I think our offensive pace was better. Attacking the paint was pretty strong. When you have 72 points in the paint, that's a number you don't see very often over the course of the season. So, that was terrific. Love the 27 offensive rebounds. We've been defensive rebounding pretty well, but I think this team is capable of being better offensive rebounders. We saw that today with AJ (Jenkins). That's something we need to do a little bit more. We needed a win like this. We played pretty well the last 30 minutes."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders take a trip across the state for a matchup against Hampton on Thursday. Tipoff from the Hampton Convocation Center is at 11:00 a.m. and can be watched on FloSports and heard on WRAD 1460 AM.
