Softball Rallies from Down Seven to Force Extras, Ultimately Falls at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Radford softball program came back from down seven runs Thursday night in the opener of the Pirate Clash, ultimately falling 9-8 to the hosts East Carolina in extra innings.

Despite the offensive battle that would eventually break out, Radford and East Carolina were initially locked in a pitcher's duel through the early innings. Morgan Cooper started in the circle and struck out two batters in the first and retired the side in the second for a scoreless first two innings.

In the third, however, the Pirates piled on five runs thanks to an error, some walks and a homer. Madison Sabo entered and quickly got two outs to end the threat. A two-run homer by the Pirates in the fourth extended their lead to 7-0, but Radford didn't back down.

Still looking for their first hit in the fifth, Radford got it from Abby Bossler. The hit train would follow Bossler as Grace Hogie singled and Kelley Feigen singled to score Bossler. Emily Smith would get a big double to make it just a 7-2 game.

After an error in the field by the Pirates, Radford further cashed in thanks to Isabel Harrison who tripled in a pair of runs to make it just a two-run game at 7-5. After a groundout scored Harrison, the Pirates would get one back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to make it 8-6.

With both teams held scoreless in the sixth, Radford would dig deep to try and force extras. Klara Van Beuge would lead the rally with a double, but Radford was down to its last out still down two runs. Amanda Lee would double home Van Beuge and it was Cassi Barbato who had the game-tying hit with a single to center that scored Lee.

Dakota Redmon would enter to pitch in the seventh and quickly retired East Carolina to force extras. Feigen and E. Smith would both reach base with two outs in the eighth, but Radford wasn't able to scratch across a run. East Carolina would rally in the bottom half, scoring the game-winning run with an infield single to sneak away with the 9-8 final.
