Timely Hitting Leads Softball to Pair of Wins Over UMBC and East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. –The Radford softball program used timely hitting and great pitching Friday to earn victories 4-2 over UMBC and 6-5 against East Carolina on day two of the Pirate Clash.

GAME ONE
Back in the circle, Morgan Cooper got the starting nod for Radford and got the Highlanders started right. The sophomore retired the first eight straight batters she faced, only being broken up by a double in the third. Cooper worked around that double keeping things scoreless and allowing Radford to strike first.

Emily Smith led off the inning with a single and quickly moved to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Grace Bechtol. Isabel Harrison had the RBI hit, as she singled to right to score Smith. An error allowed Harrison to move all the way to third, and Amanda Lee drove her home with a groundnut to make it a 2-0 lead.

After another scoreless frame from Cooper, Radford added on to their lead. Kelley Feigen would jump start the next rally with a single while Amber Wolfe double to put both in scoring position. Once again, it was the hot bat of E. Smith who singled in both runs to make it 4-0 Radford.

The first two Golden Retrievers would reach in the fifth, resulting in UMBC's first run of the day. Cooper locked things down from there retiring three straight to escape any more damage. Cooper would also dial up a quiet sixth inning of work to keep the 4-1 lead.

Klara Van Beuge picked up a pinch hit double in the bottom of the sixth, but Radford's offense wasn't able to add on any more insurance. UMBC would get back one run in the seventh, but Cooper was efficient once again to eliminate the threat and seal the 4-2 victory for the Highlanders.

GAME TWO
Looking to avenge their extra inning loss from the night before, Radford didn't wait long to get on the board against East Carolina in game two. Harrison singled, Lee singled and Rachel Smith walked to load the bases. Feigen got her first big strike of the game with a sacrifice fly that put Radford ahead 1-0.

With two outs, Cassi Barbato roped a double down the right field line to score two more and give Radford a 3-0 lead. Dakota Redmon would get the start, picking up a strikeout in a scoreless first inning of work.

Bechtol and Harrison would both single in the second, but Radford wasn't able to cross home in the second. A double play in the bottom of the inning helped Redmon toss another scoreless inning. In the third, however, the Eagles would punch back with four runs off five hits go up 4-3.

Radford got a run back in the fourth to retie the game thanks to another timely two-out hit from Lee. Her RBI single up the middle scored Bossler, making it a 4-4 game. East Carolina got a two out RBI of their own in the bottom of the inning to retake a 5-4 edge over Radford.

Refusing to back down, a theme for the Highlanders against the Pirates this weekend, Radford kept battling. Feigen led the inning off with her second hit and Grace Hogie walked to put two on. Once again, Barbato had the big hit with a double scoring both pushing Radford back ahead 6-5.

Looking to settle back in, Redmon retook the circle with the lead and put forth a huge effort. Another double play helped put a zero on the board in the bottom of the fifth and Feigen helped her batterymate with a strong throw to second to catch a runner stealing and end the sixth. Redmon would cap the impressive bounce back, tossing a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the 6-5 victory and end the Friday unbeaten.
