Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Electric Second Quarter Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon but was unable to hold on as Presbyterian powered past in the 78-71 final.

Prior to the game's start, Radford honored their seven seniors for their contributions to the program over the years. Honored seniors included Reniya Jones, Adriana Shipp-Davis, Taylor Napper, Kirby Brown, Makayla Firebaugh and two student managers Dylan Gotimer and Turner Martin.

KEY STATS
  • The Highlanders shot 53% from three-point range with eight makes led by Joi Williams, Makayla Firebaugh and Adriana Shipp-Davis who each had a pair.
  • Four different Highlanders finish in double figures scoring including Williams (16), Taylor Napper (11), Cate Carlson (10) and Adriana Shipp-Davis (10).
  • Radford created 10 steals off Presbyterian's 16 turnovers but committed 19 turnovers themselves.
  • Carlson was a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line, the first Highlander to be perfect with that many attempts since she also achieved the same feat at Presbyterian earlier this season.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders got off to a shaky start in the game, being held to just two made shots over the first seven minutes of play. Adelyn Traylor-Walker had both those makes, but the Highlanders finally got rolling thanks to Carlson, Napper and Williams to make it just a 17-12 deficit after a quarter.

Out of the break, Shipp-Davis ignited the offense with a step-back three while Williams provided another layup down low. Fastbreak points from Shipp-Davis gave Radford its first lead 19-17 quickly followed by threes from Firebaugh and Reniya Jones forcing a Presbyterian timeout.

Out of the break, Radford's defense kept Presbyterian quiet while Firebaugh and Shipp-Davis combined again to give Radford a 30-17 lead. The Highlanders offense kept rolling and would build up a 37-28 lead at the half eliminating the earlier deficit in just one quarter.

Out of the halftime break, however, the Blue Hose broke out with a 9-2 run to tighten the game. A Williams' three put Radford back ahead 42-37 as the Highlanders looked to hold on. Radford did some work at the free throw line, pacing ahead 51-48 with a minute left in the quarter, but five straight points from Presbyterian over the final 50 seconds put them back ahead 53-51.

That advantage would hold as Radford looked for answers on the offensive end. A clutch three from Kirah Dandridge tried to spark a late rally, but Presbyterian held on for the eventual 78-71 finish.
