Softball Drops Pair of Games to Bucknell and Penn State

SALEM, Va. –The Radford softball program fell in both their games to Bucknell and Penn State Friday afternoon to open their weekend at the Hokie Invite.

GAME ONE
Trouble early spelled doom for the Highlanders in their first game of the day as the Bison struck for seven runs in the first inning. Bucknell scored just two runs the rest of the way in the shortened meeting.

Amanda Lee would single followed by a Cassi Barbato double to try and cut into the deficit in the first, but Radford wasn't able to score. The Highlanders would spread four hits over the next offensive frames as well but just weren't able to cash in going down 8-0 after four innings.

Rachel Smith had the offensive spark of the game as she drove in the lone run of the morning with a solo home run in the fifth before the game would go final 9-1.

GAME TWO
R. Smith wouldn't wait long in the second game to follow up her homer in game one to give Radford new life against Penn State. Lee and Barbato would both reach base, similar to the first game's opening inning, and this time R. Smith cashed in with a three-run home run to give Radford the 3-0 lead.

Penn State would strike for two runs in the first, but starting pitcher Dakota Redmon would settle in to preserve the lead. Radford would have another scoring chance in the second with the bases loaded, but the team wasn't able to cross another run.

The Nittany Lions would strike for two runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 4-3. The Highlanders kept putting runners on base with multiple hits and well worked at bats resulting in walks, but the timely hit just didn't come through.

After R. Smith added another hit to her impressive day in the seventh to try and spark a rally, three straight outs followed to seal the deal in the eventual 5-3 final.
