Softball Downs Middle Tennessee and Earns Power Win Over Louisville at Day Two of The Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla. –The Radford softball program bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon earning a 3-2 victory over Middle Tennessee and a 3-1 power win over Louisville in the second day of The Spring Games.

GAME ONE
In the first game of the day against Middle Tennessee, Cassi Barbato got her big day started with a single in the first inning. The offense wasn't able to strike, leading to Dakota Redmon making her pitching debut in the bottom half of the inning. It was a strong first impression as Redmon dialed up three strikeouts to retire the side.

Redmon and Isabel Harrison would both single to lead off the second, but both would be stranded in scoring position. After a 1-2-3 second inning, Redmon was excellent again in the third with some help from Amber Wolfe who caught her first runner stealing of the season.

After a quiet fourth, Radford was able to break through in the fifth. Barbato began the hit train with a single, quickly followed by Grace Hogie and Rachel Smith to load the bases. Kelley Feigen came through with the big hit, Radford's fourth straight, scoring Hogie and Barbato to go up 2-0. Radford would add one more thanks to an error before the frame ended to lead 3-0.

Now with the lead, Redmon dialed up two more strikeouts for a scoreless bottom of the fifth. The Blue Raiders were able to break through for a pair of runs in the sixth to make it just a 3-2 Radford lead, but Redmon was lights out the rest of the way.

To cap the game in the sixth, Redmon worked around a leadoff single to induce three straight outs and seal the 3-2 win. The victory marked the first for Head Coach Kevin Fagan as a Highlander, who wasn't done quite yet.

GAME TWO
Back in the circle for game two looking to continue her great start to the season was Morgan Cooper, now facing an ACC foe in Louisville. The sophomore worked through trouble early, only allowing a single run to the Cardinals after their first two batters reached.

Radford would get two hits of their own in the bottom of the first, but a double play wiped the early scoring threat. In the second, the offense would keep pushing and break through.

Harrison would lead off the inning with a base hit, moving to second on an error. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to third, Redmon picked up an RBI single to tie the game. Abby Bossler and Grace Bechtol quickly followed with singles of their own to load the bases.

Cassi Barbato had the next big hit, moving the line along, and giving Radford the 2-1 lead. Amanda Lee made it five straight hits for Radford with another RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1.

Now with a lead, Cooper worked with ease in the third, fourth and fifth innings to keep things rolling along. Radford's offense was also held quiet, but Cooper kept dealing to keep the lead intact.

After working through some traffic in the sixth, Cooper would work around an error in the seventh, getting her first two strikeouts of the day to end a Louisville scoring threat and seal the 3-1 victory.

The power win over their ACC foe Louisville marked Radford's second such win in the last two seasons, previously beating Purdue during the 2024 campaign. Prior to that, Radford hadn't beaten a power foe since the 2019 campaign.
