Strong Start and Late Rally Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls at Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program got off to a hot start and rallied late, but a rough second quarter allowed a comeback that saw Charleston Southern take the eventual 60-50 final.

KEY STATS
  • Taylor Napper stayed hot with another 18 points today, 10 coming in the first quarter.
  • Adelyn Traylor-Walker returned to the starting five and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
  • The Highlanders 18% shooting mark from three marked just the second time during the conference play this season the team was held under 20%.
  • Radford shot well in the opening quarters of each half, over 50% in each, but struggled in the second and fourth quarters for just 10 total points and a 14% shooting mark.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders offense picked up right where they left off earlier this week to continue rolling in the first quarter of Saturday's regular season finale. Napper and Makayla Firebaugh got the scoring started, with Napper accounting for 10 of Radford's first 13 points.

Up 13-2 six minutes in, Radford kept adding as Anna Stromberg, Traylor-Walker and Adriana Shipp-Davis all checked in for points to end the quarter 21-9 in Radford's favor. Radford's offense would slow down in the second quarter, however, as Charleston Southern came all the way back to flip the score. An extended scoring run saw the Buccaneers take the lead and exit the half up 30-23.

Radford would regroup and put forth a great effort in the third to attempt the comeback. Kirah Dandridge got the rally started with an and-one that pulled Radford to down just 39-31. Joi Williams, Dandridge and Napper combined for a 6-0 Radford run pulling Charleston Southern's lead down to 44-38. Ending the quarter was Williams and Firebaugh with makes, making it just a 42-46 game.

Out of the quarter break, Cate Carlson and Napper combined for back-to-back shots that tied the game at 46-all. An unfortunate scoring drought would strike, however, as Radford was held scoreless over the next six minutes. The Buccaneers would hold on for the eventual 60-50 final.
