TYSONS, Va. – In a contest that was much closer than the final indicated, the Radford baseball program put up a fight against Georgetown but ultimately fell by a 6-2 margin in the series-opening game at Capital One Park on Friday afternoon.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Radford – 2, Georgetown – 6
LOCATION: Capital One Park (Tysons, Virginia)
RECORDS: Radford 10-10 (3-0), Georgetown 8-14 (0-0)
THE BREAKDOWN
-
Hunter Keen continued his hot start to the season with another 2-for-4 showing that included a double.
-
Brady Whitacre drove in the lone Radford RBI on the day off a 1-for-3 effort.
- Both
Breckin Nace (1-for-3, one base on balls) and
Corbin Grantham (two walks) came around to score a single time.
-
Eli Hudgins added the other Highlander hit with a 1-for-4 performance. His day also included a stolen base.
-
Drew Stanley took the tough luck loss on the mound with six strong innings of work. He allowed seven hits and four runs (all earned) to go with three strikeouts. Radford was down no more than two with him in the game.
-
Trey Ludy, fresh off his Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week award, fired a scoreless frame out of the bullpen with a punch out.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings as neither team could push a run across.
- Radford broke the scoreless drought with a run in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.
- The advantage was short lived as Georgetown dropped three runs in the bottom of the inning to jump ahead 3-1.
- The Highlanders weren't done there though. Radford responded right back in the top of the sixth off a Whitacre RBI single up the middle to make it 3-2.
- The Highlanders then went on to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but Georgetown worked out of the jam to keep it at 3-2.
- The Hoyas would go on to score once in the bottom of the seventh and two more times in the eighth to escape with the 6-2 victory.
