ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford women's lacrosse program was locked in a tight battle at Winthrop before the match eventually slipped away late 18-12 in the Eagles' favor.
KEY STATS
PLAY BY PLAY
After the hosts Eagles opened the scoring in the match to take a brief lead, the Highlanders responded with a two goal rally to take a lead of their own. Lytton began the scoring for Radford while Gee followed her for the 2-1 lead five minutes into the game.
Winthrop used a 3-0 run to retake a 4-2 lead, but Radford would respond with a 3-0 run of their own to reestablish their lead before the quarter ended. Lytton supplied two of those scores joined by Cheney as Radford was able to bring the 5-4 advantage into the second quarter.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the two squads traded goals to begin the second quarter. Hannah Hanger provided a goal that put Radford ahead 6-5, but an eight-minute scoreless drought would see Winthrop pull back ahead. Gee and Maggie Wisniewski would provide scoring efforts to keep Radford in the close 10-8 battle through one half.
A free position goal by Cheney would pull the deficit to 10-9 right as the third quarter began. Another scoreless drought would hit for the Highlanders, however, allowing the Eagles to score four unanswered to go up 14-9. Hanger and Maddie Abbott would score over the closing minutes of the third as Radford tried to rally.
Madison Driscoll would score to open the fourth and pull Radford even closer. The Winthrop defense would buckle down from there, holding the Highlanders scoreless over the final 12 minutes of play using a late flurry of goals to hold on for the 18-12 final.
