Baseball suffers setback in series opener to High Point

RADFORD, Va. – In an early season battle for first place in the Big South, the Radford baseball program found itself on the wrong side of a 11-2 decision to High Point in a conference clash at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Radford – 2, High Point – 11
LOCATION: Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium (Radford, Virginia)
RECORDS: Radford 12-12 (3-1 Big South), HPU 18-8 (4-0 Big South)

THE BREAKDOWN
- Two batters made up the Highlander offense as both Eli Hudgins and Hunter Keen posted 2-for-3 evenings overall.
- Hudgins finished with a home run, one RBI, a run scored and a base on balls while Keen chipped in another run and a walk.
- Ian Hubbard added his first RBI of the season in the contest to round out the Radford scoring.
- James Ward and Kyle Crisp both worked a single walk as well.
- The Highlanders will look to break a seven-game losing streak against the Panthers with game two of the series on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- High Point struck right away with a run in the top of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
- The Panthers extended their advantage with three more runs in the top of the third to push ahead 4-0.
- With the bases loaded, Hubbard put the ball in play and plated Keen in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.
- HPU pushed another run across in the top of the sixth as the Panthers took another four-run lead at 5-1.
- The Highlanders tried to get back in it off Hudgin's solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to make it interesting again at 5-2.
- The Panthers pounced at that point with one run in the seventh, another three in the eighth and two more in the ninth to seal the 11-2 win.
