Pitching Blanks Sacred Heart For 13 Scoreless Innings in Doubleheader Sweep

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program opened the home portion of their schedule Tuesday afternoon with a pair of dominant victories over Sacred Heart. The pitching staff tossed 13 scoreless innings in the 8-0 win in game one and 6-0 win in game two.

GAME ONE
Dakota Redmon would set the tone for the dominant day with a strikeout in a scoreless first. After Amanda Lee walked and Cassi Barbato singled to start the bottom half, Radford took advantage of some Sacred Heart miscues.

A throwing error allowed Lee to score and after a perfectly executed double steal, Barbato took home to make it a 2-0 lead. Redmon pitched another perfect frame in the second, allowing Radford to strike again. With two outs, Lee picked up another hit with an RBI double scoring Grace Bechtol for the 3-0 advantage.

Redmon would strike out the side in the third, and her offense responded with a run once again. After walks by Amber Wolfe and Abby Bossler, Radford once again executed a double steal to score again and lead 4-0.

Redmon kept cruising in the fourth, striking out two more batters. A costly fielding error by Sacred Heart allowed Radford to extend its lead to 5-0 after four innings. In the fifth, Redmon made it 14 straight retired before Sacred Heart got its first baserunner off a hard comebacker. Redmon left the runner stranded and kept the shutout intact.

With more walks and a Jada Holt hit, Radford scored another run as Isabel Harrison picked up the RBI for the 6-0 lead. Redmon tossed another 1-2-3 sixth, allowing Radford to strike for the run rule win in the bottom half.

Barbato and Rachel Smith would strike for back-to-back doubles for the first run, with R. Smith coming home after another double by Grace Hogie for the 8-0 run-rule victory. It also sealed Radford's second shutout of the season, setting the stage for the eventual third shutout in game two.

GAME TWO
Morgan Cooper would get the start in game two and gave Radford another excellent pitching performance. Cooper began the game retiring three straight, but Sacred Heart got their first 1-2-3 defensive inning of the day in the bottom of the first.

Over the second and third innings, Cooper kept cruising picking up four more strikeouts while the offense looked to score. An unfortunate double play and caught stealing kept things knotted up at 0-0 through the first three innings.

Cooper faced her first runner in scoring position in the fourth but quickly induced a foul out to escape the threat. Two of Radford's first three batters would reach in the bottom half, but the team would come up empty again.

After a scoreless top of the fifth, Radford's offense finally broke through. Bechtol began the rally with an infield hit quickly followed by a single from Harrison putting runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Bechtol to score, and a Barbato RBI groundout scored Harrison. A throwing error would also allow R. Smith to score before all was said and done as Radford led 3-0.

Cooper dialed up another easy inning of work in the sixth, allowing the offense to add some insurance runs. Hogie began the inning with a hit moving to second on a wild pitch. After a walk by Holt, Harrison picked up another clutch double to score two runs. Lee would also single, scoring Harrison, to push Radford's lead to 6-0.

It was business as usual for Cooper in the seventh, who picked up one more strikeout in the seventh to wrap up her perfect performance and first shutout of the season in the 6-0 final.
