Eighth Inning Rally Soars Softball Past Binghamton

HARRISONBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program used a big eighth inning effort against Binghamton Saturday to pick up the 10-4 extra innings victory in their lone game of the day.

GAME ONE
For the first game of the day Abby Peace got the starting nod and dialed up the best performance of her season so far to help Radford in the eventual winning effort. Radford's offense would go to work early to give Peace room to work with.

Amanda Lee began the game by drawing a walk and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt. Moving to third on a wild pitch, Cassi Barbato picked up the RBI single for the 1-0 lead. Barbato would also move up on a wild pitch and then move to third on a groundout. After Grace Hogie walked, Barbato stole home to push the lead to 2-0.

Binghamton would add an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tighten the game at 2-1. Peace would keep things scoreless with a 1-2-3 second while Radford tried to add on. Lee would begin another rally with a single in the third moving all the way to third on groundouts. This time it was Rachel Smith with the RBI hit to push things to 3-1.

Peace would continue to roll from there, keeping Binghamton scoreless with ease over the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Binghamton would find their swing in the bottom of the seventh, however, forcing Peace out of the game before eventually tying the game at 3-3. Morgan Cooper entered in a pivotal relief role with two runners in scoring position and one out. Cooper stood strong, retiring two straight to send the game to extras.

For a second straight game the Highlanders found themselves in the eighth and for the second straight time the team came out swinging. With Barbato placed on second, R. Smith immediately singled to move her closer to home. After R. Smith stole second, Hogie sent them both home with a single to center.

Up 5-3, Radford kept rolling as Amber Wolfe walked and Abby Bossler singled to score Hogie. Emily Smith drew a hit by pitch and Grace Bechtol singled to score Wolfe for the 7-3 lead. A double play allowed another run to cross before Barbato turned the order over with an RBI single that made it a 10-3 Radford lead.

Binghamton would score just the lone run in the bottom of the eighth, but the damage done in the top half was more than enough as Radford held on for the 10-4 victory.
