Kardiac Kids strike again; Baseball posts thrilling extra-innings win over UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Kardiac Kids struck again as the Radford baseball program posted a thrilling 4-3, 13-inning victory over UNC Greensboro in a record-setting day to even the non-conference series at one game apiece inside the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Radford has had a flair for the dramatic to open the 2025 campaign. Three of the squad's 13 contests (or nearly 25 percent of its games) have been decided in extra innings so far this season.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Radford – 4, UNCG – 3 (13 innings)
LOCATION: UNCG Baseball Stadium
RECORDS: Radford 6-7 (0-0), UNCG 6-8 (0-0)

THE BREAKDOWN
- In a spot that is usually led by the offense, it was the bullpen that stepped up big in this one as Trey Ludy, Mason Hatcher and Hunter Howard were instrumental in the victory.
- Ludy came in first and went three innings with just three hits and one earned run allowed. He also struck out five UNCG batters.
- Hatcher was next with three scoreless frames of his own to go with another five punch outs.
- Howard closed things out and collected his first victory of the season with two scoreless innings of work. He notched a single strikeout, did not allow a hit and just one runner reached base when he was on the mound.
- Not to be overshadowed, Joshua Milleville got the start and went five innings with just four hits and two unearned runs against. He punched out eight batters in the near quality start.
- As a group, the Radford pitching staff recorded 19 strikeouts. The performance set a new school record in the category for a single game and was the most punch outs posted by a Big South squad so far this season.
- No other Highlander pitching staff notched more than 17 strikeouts in a single game all-time coming into Saturday.
- To flip over to the offense, James Ward (2-for-5, two runs scored, one RBI, one walk), Tyler Sparrer (2-for-4, one RBI) and Eli Hudgins (one RBI) all drove in a run for the Highlanders, respectively.
- Corbin Grantham chipped in a 1-for-5 afternoon that included a run.
- Matthew McGovern also came around to score a single time as a pinch runner.
- Jhonkeanu Perez (1-for-5), Tyler Kehoe (1-for-6) and Noah Toole (1-for-6) all chipped in a base knock in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNC Greensboro took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the fourth to jump out to a 2-0 edge.
- Radford answered back in the top of the sixth off a RBI double by Ward that plated Grantham to halve the advantage to 2-1.
- The Spartans thought they scored another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 3-1 game.
- Radford wasn't going anywhere without a fight as the Highlanders pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game to extras.
- The two sides played three scoreless frames before Radford broke the tie with a run in the top of the 13th to give the Highlanders their first lead of the game at 4-3.
- Howard and Radford slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning to seal the 4-3 win.
