Fourth Inning Rally Soars Highlanders Past Eagles

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program used a big fourth inning in the series opener Friday afternoon to take down Winthrop 7-0.

KEY STATS
  • Dakota Redmon was dominant once again for the Highlanders with a seven-inning shutout, her second of the season.
  • Grace Bechtol led the offense with three hits in three trips to the plate also totaling 2 RBIs.
  • Klara Van Beuge also had a big day in the DP spot with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Radford has now won the series opener in each of their five Big South series so far.
  • Radford left just three runners on the bases.
  • Radford has reached 10 wins in the conference schedule in 13 games, their quickest to that mark since the 2014 season.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Eagles would open Friday's contest with a pair of two-out base runners that each moved to second and third off a wild pitch. In Redmon's only stress test of the evening, she struck out the final out to escape the jam.

Radford's offense would take a couple of frames before it was able to get going. Redmon, in the circle, kept the Eagles quiet offensively only allowing a pair of base runners in the second and third. In the fourth, the Highlanders' offense would break through in a big way.

Isabel Harrison began Radford's rally with Rachel Smith following her for a single to put two on. The Eagles made a pitching change, but Radford didn't miss a beat. After Smith and Harrison moved up a base on a double steal, Kelley Feigen walked to load the bases. Bechtol got her first big hit of the day with a single up the middle that put Radford ahead 2-0.

A single by Bossler would reload the bases for Radford and Van Beuge laced a big hit up the middle to double Radford's lead at 4-0. With two outs in the inning, Lee kept the train moving with a hit to right that brought home two more runs and made it a 6-0 affair.

Despite the extended inning, Redmon continued to deal in the fifth striking out two. After R. Smith drew a walk to open the fifth, she would move all the way to third off a passed ball and wild pitch. Feigen would send Smith home on a sacrifice fly giving Radford the dominant 7-0 edge.

After an extended stoppage in the top of the sixth to switch out plate umpires, Redmon went back to work to retire three straight. In the seventh, it was more of the same as the freshman sealed the deal with three straight outs again to finalize the 7-0 victory.
