Senior Day Split Leads to Softball’s Series Victory Over Eagles

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program took game one of Saturday's doubleheader 2-1 before falling in game two 1-2 to split the day but take the series against Winthrop.

Prior to game one, Radford honored their three seniors Rachel Smith, Emily Smith and Cassi Barbato and thanked them for all their hard work as Highlanders.

KEY STATS
  • The extra inning walk-off hit was Bechtol's second in two weeks at home, walking off Longwood just six days ago in similar fashion.
  • Morgan Cooper set new career highs for innings pitched (8.0) and strikeouts (9) in her strong performance in game one.
  • Radford's offense struck out just five times over 57 plate appearance over the doubleheader.
  • Isabel Harrison ended the day with a pair of clutch RBIs for the Highlanders, leading the team offensively.

GAME ONE
With the series up for grabs, Radford leaned on its pitching in game one and got another fantastic showing from Cooper. The Eagles had a pair of baserunners in the first and second, but Cooper ended the threats with strikeouts to keep the game at 0-0.

Cooper would tally three more strikeouts in the third and induced a 1-2-3 fourth inning to keep cruising onwards. Radford's offense got its first baserunner in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a walk from Harrison but were kept hitless in the continued tie.

The Eagles would get two runners on for a scoring threat in the fifth, but Cooper was able to escape the jam with a strikeout and flyout. After another three-up, three-down sixth the offense was finally able to break the ice.

Klara Van Beuge would work a walk and be replaced on the bases by Bechtol thanks to a fielder's choice. Swinging at the first pitch she saw, Harrison roped a double to left center to score Bechtol ending the no-hitter and shutout in one swing.

Radford now lead 1-0 and Cooper was able to retire the first two batters in the seventh. Down to their final strike, Winthrop was able to just scrape a homer past the center field wall to tie the game back up at 1-1. After a scoreless bottom half of the inning, Radford was forced into extras for the seventh time this season.

The top of the eighth saw a pair of two-out runners for Winthrop. Cooper was able to dial back in and record the final out, preserving the 1-1 tie. In the bottom half it was once again Van Beuge working a walk that began Radford's rally. A double by E. Smith to right center would set Radford up with two runners in scoring position and one out.

Just as she did a week prior, Bechtol stepped up to the plate able to play hero. The sophomore delivered once again grounding a ball up the middle that allowed Van Beuge to score the winning run easily for the 2-1 final in eight.

GAME TWO
Radford would lean on their pitching once again in game two and Dakota Redmon was as advertised for the finale. The freshman retired three straight to retire the game, but a single by Bechtol was all Radford's offense would put forth in the bottom half.

Redmon would continue to cruise retiring the first nine straight batters she faced into the fourth inning. An infield single broke the streak, but Redmon retired three straight to keep it a 0-0 game through four innings.

In the fifth, the Eagles wouldn't get the ball out of the infield but would produce their first run of the game. A hit by pitch and walk would put two on, and an infield single scored a run. Redmon would retire three straight to escape the jam without allowing any more damage.

Offensive struggles continued, however, and Winthrop added another crucial run in the sixth via a solo shot. Looking for some more magic in the seventh, Radford put forth another valiant rally. Abby Bossler would reach on an infield single while Bechtol walked to put two on. Harrison was able to rope another clutch double into right, but Radford's tying run was cut down at the plate to end the game at 2-1.

UP NEXT
Radford will get the next week off from Big South action but will make a midweek trip to Marshall on April 22nd for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
