Softball Rallies, Holds on Late for Opener Win at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford softball program held on thanks to a seventh inning rally Friday night to take the series opener from Charleston Southern 4-2.

KEY STATS
  • Isabel Harrison led the offense with a pair of early RBIs and helped knock in the fourth and final run of the game.
  • Grace Bechtol, Klara Van Beuge and Emily Smith all provided pivotal runs late in the batting order.
  • Dakota Redmon spun her fifth straight complete game in Big South play, only allowing a pair of runs striking out four batters.
  • The victory is Radford's sixth this season when tied or trailing after six innings.

PLAY BY PLAY
With both squads coming in off series victories last week in Big South play, a pitching battle was set up early as both sides were retired in order in the first. The second inning followed a similar theme, with Redmon stranding a double on second thanks to a pair of strikeouts.

In the third, Radford's offense got its first baserunners thanks to a single from Van Beuge and Abby Bossler walk. After a fielder's choice put Van Beuge on third and Amanda Lee on first, Lee swiped second to set up Harrison. With two outs, Harrison snuck one past the right side of the infield to score a pair and put Radford up 2-0.

Over the third, fourth and fifth innings the pitching settled back in. Redmon only allowed a pair of baserunners as the game continued to cruise along with the 2-0 lead. The Buccaneers would break through in the sixth for two runs, but Redmon shut down any further rally stranding a runner on second to keep the 2-2 tie.

The offense would step up big again in the seventh using some early hits to set up some scoring opportunities. Bechtol ignited the rally with a strong double to left while a groundout moved her to third. A fielding error would allow Bechtol to score for the 3-2 lead. After E. Smith was hit by a pitch, another fielding error allowed Bossler to come around and score the 4-2 advantage.

After replay review confirmed the fourth run scored, the Highlanders moved to the bottom of the seventh looking to hold on. An error would allow a Buccaneer to reach first, but Redmon was lights out otherwise retiring the next three batters straight to cap the 4-2 win.
