Softball Takes Third Straight Big South Series with Saturday Split at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Radford softball program earned their third straight Big South series win Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader split against Charleston Southern winning game one 8-2 before falling in game two 3-1.

KEY STATS
  • Cooper led the Highlanders in game one with an excellent seven innings of work that included four strikeouts.
  • Grace Bechtol had a big day at the plate with two hits, a walk, stolen base and 3 RBI.
  • Bechtol, Harrison and R. Smith all scored two runs apiece over the two games.
  • Radford's offense drew nine walks overall led by Klara Van Beuge and Feigen who each had two.
  • The last time Radford won three straight conference series to open a season was 2013 when the team also won three straight against Liberty, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina.

GAME ONE
Behind another great pitching show in game one, Radford would have their best offensive showing of the weekend to seal the series. After a quiet first, Radford struck in the second after three straight walks loaded the bases. Emily Smith would earn an RBI single that gave Radford the 1-0 edge.

After starting pitcher Morgan Cooper struck out two straight batters to leave two runners on in the bottom of the second, Radford's offense struck again in the third. Rachel Smith and Isabel Harrison both singled to put two runners on. Cassi Barbato would single Harrison home while a Grace Bechtol sacrifice fly gave Radford the 3-0 lead.

Cooper would dial up a 1-2-3 bottom of the third and got a clutch throw from Kelley Feigen in the fourth to catch a runner stealing and keep the Buccaneers quiet. With two outs in the fifth, Feigen stayed hot just missing a home run but settling for an RBI double that pushed the lead to 4-0.

Both teams would have a quiet sixth before Radford's offense fully broke through in the seventh. Harrison led off the inning with a single followed by a fielding error that put runners on the corners. A fly out moved Rachel Smith to second and Bechtol would bring home the pair with an RBI double.

Already up 6-1, a wild pitch would allow Bechtol to score, and Abby Bossler would earn an RBI groundout before the half inning ended. The Buccaneers would scratch across one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Cooper ended the game with a strikeout to seal the 8-2 finish.

GAME TWO
Radford would get another solid pitching performance in game two, but offensive struggles and an untimely error spelled doom in the 3-1 final. In the opening inning, Harrison would collect another solid hit, but she would end up stranded at second.

Starting pitcher Dakota Redmon would cruise through the early phases of the game, retiring three straight in the first. Both teams were quiet in the second as Radford would get another scoring opportunity in the third as E. Smith made it on base thanks to an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Charleston Southern retired two straight, however, keeping Radford scoreless.

The Buccaneers got their first runner of the day via a walk in the third, but Redmon shut down the inning before any harm could come. Radford would get two more baserunners in the fourth, but the scoring opportunity would slip away again as the game remained tied 0-0.

An unfortunate hit by pitch would prove costly in the bottom of the fourth as a two-out single by the Buccaneers scored the hit batter and gave them their first lead of the weekend 1-0.

With two outs in the fifth, Charleston Southern added two more unearned runs. After retiring the first two batters, Charleston Southern rallied with two hits an used an untimely error to score two more and move ahead 3-0.

Radford would look to rally in the seventh and did just that as three batters quickly reached base. The Highlanders were patient at the plate as Van Buege walked, Ambe Wolfe walked and E. Smith reached thanks to an error.

Amanda Lee was able to drive in a run off a hard hit ball, but the Buccaneers shortstop made a nice play on it for a fielder's choice. Down to their final out, Radford wasn't able to come up with the big hit as Charleston Southern held on in the 3-1 final.

UP NEXT
Radford will spend the entirety of next week at home with four games on the schedule. Radford will first host UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, April 9th before hosting Longwood for a three-game series over the weekend.
