Pitching Shines as Softball Shuts Out UNC Greensboro

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program took down UNC Greensboro in a 1-0 final in a midweek tilt Wednesday afternoon highlighted by Morgan Cooper and Dakota Redmon's efforts to hold the visiting Spartans to just one hit.

KEY STATS
  • Cooper stayed hot with six strikeouts in 5 innings of work, totaling ten strikeouts over her last two starts.
  • Redmon's dominant relief work paved the way for her first save as a Highlander, and the first save by any Radford pitcher this season.
  • Over two meetings with a powerful Spartans offense this season, the Highlanders held them to just two runs over 14 innings.
  • The win is Radford's rhird over a top-60 RPI team this season, and second against a team ranked in the DI Softball Mid Major Rankings.

PLAY BY PLAY
Like the Highlanders and Spartans earlier meeting this season, it was a pitcher's duel from the start with not many baserunners to come by. Cooper set the tone early, dialing up a double play that wiped the Spartans scoring opportunity in the first.

Radford would similarly get a pair of runners in the bottom of the first thanks to an infield hit by Amanda Lee and walk from Rachel Smith, but both were stranded in scoring position with two outs. Pitchers on both sides would cruise from there as Radford accounted for the only hits in the second and third innings from Kelley Feigen and Lee, who clinched a multi-hit evening.

In the fourth, Radford would break the ice. R. Smith would single followed by a walk from Cassi Barbato to set the table with none out. The duo stole third and second and Amber Wolfe came through with the big hit, singling up the middle to score Smith who was the lone run of the day.

Cooper would work a clean 1-2-3 fifth inning in her final frame of work. Redmon would enter in relief in the sixth working through a runner on second with one out retiring two straight. In the seventh, there were no theatrics this time from the Spartans as Redmon retired three straight to seal the shutout victory.
