Offensive Sparks Not Enough in Season Opener Loss for Men’s Soccer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Radford men's soccer program saw some offensive highlights despite a lopsided final 6-2 in their season opener at UNC Greensboro.

KEY STATS
  • Kenshin Akimoto netted Radford's first goal of the season, and his first goal at the Division I level.
  • Freshman Rahul Moriarty also scored his first collegiate goal.
  • Radford outshot UNC Greensboro in the second half but fell overall in the match 19-11. Only three of their 11 shots came on goal.
  • On a busy night, Ben Miller recorded seven saves in his first start for Radford.

PLAY BY PLAY
An early scoring outburst by the Spartans threatened to sink the Highlanders early, but the team held strong to pull things tight midway through the first half. Down 2-0, Radford got a ball placed perfectly into the box off a free kick. The ball found the head of Gavin Edgington before bouncing to Kenshin Akimoto who headed the ball in strong for the first goal of the season.

Down 2-1, UNC Greensboro would add one more goal before the half closed to go up 3-1. An early strike in the second half pushed the Spartans ahead 4-1. The Highlanders wouldn't go away quietly, as freshman Rahul Moriarty struck for his first career goal.

Once again it came off the height of the Highlanders. Kiril Smirnov found the cross into the box first before Moriarty put a strong head onto the ball and found the back of the net.

Before the match came to a close, UNC Greensboro would strike two more times to push the score to its final mark 6-2.
