Early Scoring Pushes Highlanders to Victory in Home Opener

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program bounced back for a 2-0 victory over Emory & Henry Thursday night thanks to a pair of first half goals in their home opener.

KEY STATS
  • Jashyra Johnson scored in her second straight match, netting the game-winner in the 3rd minute.
  • Mallory Harmison assisted the opening goal, marking her second straight contest with an assist as well.
  • Radford outshot Emory & Henry 20-5 with 12 of those shots coming on goal.
  • Lilly Short scored her first goal of the season with three of her five shots coming on goal in the contest.
  • Radford has now opened their season at home with a win in three straight seasons and seven of the last nine.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders didn't wait long to net their first home goal of the season Thursday night, as Johnson made sure to take advantage of a deflected shot and one-on-one opportunity with the opposing keeper. Johnson won the battle, heading the ball directly to the back of the net to put Radford ahead just a few minutes into the game.

Radford would maintain possession for a majority of the match. The Wasps would put together three straight shots at the midway point of the first half, but the Highlanders responded with their second goal of the night.

After Johnson crossed the ball in from the corner, a shot by Caitlyn Nottingham deflected off a Wasp defender before Short was able to clean it up and collect the goal to put Radford ahead 2-0.

The second half saw a stout defensive effort thwart a few Wasp scoring attempts. Lexi Radvanyi would make two of her three saves in the second half to preserve her first clean sheet of the season.

The Highlanders had a handful of scoring opportunities late, but none would cash in as the 2-0 score would hold final for the first victory of the season.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I'm happy we opened the home season with a win today," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "There were some good moments in the game, but overall, our level has to be higher than it was. A lot of credit to Emory & Henry, they played really hard and are a much improved team. We will need to do better with all aspects of the game from how we defend, how we communicate and how we finish the opportunities that we get."
