Women’s Soccer Fights Back for Draw on the Road at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program got a late goal from freshman Abby Walsh to help secure a 1-1 tie at Richmond on Thursday night.

  • Paige Olson's assist on the goal was the 26th in her career, moving her just one behind Amanda Lebo for second all-time in program history.
  • Nine of Radford's 14 shots came on goal, compared to Richmond's three shots on goal.
  • The 1-1 final marked the third straight tie between Radford and Richmond in as many years.

PLAY BY PLAY
The start of Thursday's match was a corner kick storm as both teams combined for six in the first 20 minutes. While both offense's found their footing, Radford was able to get a few shots on goal from Olson and Magda Carpenter. Both defenses held strong though, as it was a quiet first half that ended 0-0.

Richmond didn't wait long to get on the board in the second half, as a tricky shot at the top right corner of the box went just out of Lexi Radvanyi's reach to give the Spiders a 1-0 edge. With 31 minutes still to play, the Highlanders immediately went to work drawing three straight corners and firing off three shots on goal.

The immediate equalizer wouldn't come until the 70th minute when Radford got a set piece opportunity thanks to a foul about 10 feet out from the box. Olson struck the ball well and nearly scored if not for a great save, but the freshman Walsh came crashing in and was placed perfectly to clean up the shot and score tying the game.

The Highlanders defense held strong the rest of the way as the Spiders only got one shot on goal over the final 20 minutes. Despite a flurry of goals late off the Highlanders, the game would remain tied 1-1 at the final horn.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"Of course we wanted to win today, but I was proud of our performance and the result" commented Head Coach Ben Sohrabi. "Richmond is a quality Atlantic 10 team that is on the rise and to go on the road and come back after being down is a great step for this team. We have things to improve on, but I was proud of the group today."
