Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highlanders Routed by High Point, 78-40

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball team dropped their second straight game in conference play to the Big South preseason favorites High Point, 78-40, at the Qubein Center on Saturday afternoon.

KEY STATS
  • Radford struggled mightily from the floor, shooting just 22.9 percent and 8.3 percent (2-24) from beyond the three-point line.
  • Georgia Simonsen led the Highlanders with 11 points, reaching double figures for the fifth straight game.
  • High Point put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Highlanders by 26 points in the third quarter.
PLAY BY PLAY
A quick start by Simonsen and Radford gave the fans that traveled down from Virginia some early hope. After High Point scored seven of the first nine points of the contest, Simonsen added a basket to get the Highlanders within two, then a Cate Carlson three-pointer gave the Highlanders an 8-7 advantage. Some strong defense, especially forcing tough three-point shots early, kept Radford around. Simonsen continued to get good looks, keeping her team in it with seven first quarter points, but the Highlanders tariled16-12 after one.

The defenses dug in for the second quarter. Joi Williams scored the first basket of the frame just under three minutes into it to keep Radford within four. She would add another make later in the chapter, but the Panthers hit a couple of trifectas in the final couple minutes to extend their lead to 11 points at the break, 29-18.

High Point started hot and then piled on the points to pull away in the third. After a quick 7-0 burst, coach Mike McGuire called a timeout to try and get the Highlanders regrouped. Two quick scores by Simonsen and Williams got the visitors within 14 points, that's as close as it would get. The Panthers roared ahead and outscored the Highlanders 36-10 in the third stanza for a 65-28 lead.

The Panthers continued to shoot at a high clip, while the Highlanders struggled to get anything going. Ava Sawi and Anna Stromberg saw some action off the bench, with Sawi adding four points and Stromberg making a free throw. However, it was much too little too late, as the Panthers coasted to a 78-40 win.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"We have to get back to campus and get back to work very quickly," said McGuire in the postgame radio interview. "This is not the end of the season. This can be the best thing for us if we handle it correctly with a lot of responsibility. We all have to take responsibility. That starts with me. In some ways, we kind of sensed this coming. Like a little too comfortable coming back from Christmas. But, it's going to take responsibility for us to get back to work and to practice. We did not have a good week. The bye week was not good for us for a lot of reasons. But the last thing I'll finish with, we'll all be on the same street on the same bus the rest of the year. We have to be together and fight through adversity."
