Last-Second Three Topples Men’s Basketball at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford men's basketball program toughed out a physical meeting at Winthrop Wednesday night and came up just short as the Eagles connected on a last second three-pointer to sneak out with the 76-75 win.

KEY STATS
  • Del Jones stayed hot, scoring 25 points on nine made shots from the field just missing his first double-double with eight rebounds.
  • It was a team scoring effort as everyone who checked in scored at least five points.
  • The turnover bug bit the Highlanders hard as the team turned it over 19 teams, a new high in-conference, which resulted in 21-9 points off turnover margin in the Eagles' favor.
  • Radford rebounded well against one of the best rebounding teams in the conference, winning the boards 31-28. Radford was also strong at the free throw line, hitting 18 of 24 tries.

PLAY BY PLAY
The first half was a physical affair with whistles blowing often on both ends that eventually ended up in technicals being handed out as well. Early on, Radford's offense clicked from all ends as everyone who entered scored before the half ended. Lukas Walls, Jones and Brown all connected early for an 8-5 Radford lead.

Frederik Erichsen and Mari Jordan would enter the scoring fun while Louie Jordan, Jaylon Johnson and M. Jordan combined for four straight three pointers that Radford up 24-23. After a two-minute scoreless streak from both teams, Brown broke the ice with a layup while Brennan Rigsby Jr. hit another to extend Radford's lead.

As the half came to a close, Winthrop briefly stormed ahead behind five straight points before a double technical sent Radford to the line to regain their lead. Dennis Parker Jr. would hit three of four from the line to close the half as Radford led 33-32.

Parker Jr. kept firing out of the locker room, connecting with Jones for a big dunk and layup right out the gates. Jones would supply four points for Radford from there while a three from Johnson reestablished a slim 49-47 lead for Radford with 14:02 to play.

From there, Radford broke out for their biggest run of the night. Jones hit two layups while Lukas Walls nailed a three for an 11-0 Radford run that saw the lead balloon to a game-high 57-47. Four minutes after that run, though, Radford's offense stalled scoring just three points from a Parker Jr. three allowing the Eagles to climb back into the game.

Only ahead 63-59 with under seven minutes left, the Eagles offense kept firing while Radford's offense relied on the free throw line to keep pace. An 8-0 run toppled Radford's big lead, and saw Winthrop ahead 71-67 with 2:30 to go. Jones would play hero for Radford again with a big three followed by an and-one that had Radford back ahead 74-73 with 50 seconds to go.

A foul would send Tyson Brown to the line, who gave Radford a solid advantage going 1-for-2. With just two seconds left on the clock, the Eagles connected on a backbreaking three pointer. Radford didn't have enough time to respond out of a time out as Winthrop snuck out with the 76-75 final.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • UNC Asheville got back in the win column, shooting 53% from three for an 83-69 victory over USC Upstate.
  • Longwood dominated Gardner-Webb from start to finish at home, running away in a 91-56 final.
  • Presbyterian stayed hot using a dominant start to hold off Charleston Southern for an 87-83 win at home.
