Highlanders Dominate Longwood for Third Straight Win

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team (12-9, 4-2 BSC) put together one of their best performances of the season, running away with a 78-63 victory over Longwood (13-6, 4-2 BSC) on Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.

KEY STATS

  • The Highlanders scored a season-best 25 points to open the game in the first quarter, while also holding Longwood to just eight points in the second chapter.
  • Radford moves into a tie for second place in the Big South with Longwood, both at 4-2 in conference play.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lancers started the night sprinting out of the gates to an early lead, up 16-12 at the first media timeout. Williams had a hot start, scoring eight of Radford's first 10 points. The Highlanders used a 9-0 run, led in part by Angelina Nice's work on the offensive end, to go up 22-18 with a minute left in the first. Longwood managed to take a one-point lead before Williams answered with her fourth-made basket of the quarter that gave Radford a 25-23 lead after one.

The Highlander's defense stepped up in the second quarter, proving to be the deciding factor in the win. Longwood made just three baskets on 18 attempts in the quarter. Simonsen scored on Nice's nice feed to give Radford a lead they wouldn't relinquish with 6:10 left in the half. It was the start of Radford's 16-3 run the rest of the chapter. Williams finished with 18 points through the opening 20 minutes, with the Highlanders ahead 43-31 at the break.

Williams and Cate Carlson answered the question on if Longwood had made any notable adjustments to start the second half. The duo sunk a pair of three-pointers to put the Highlanders up 18 points and force the Lancers to use an early timeout. The Lancers attempted to force turnovers in the backcourt, but Radford found ways to break it. Nice and Simonsen hit shots from inside the paint to keep Radford up double digits after three, 61-48.

Nice powered the Highlanders to a hot start in the fourth, scoring three of Radford's first five baskets in the final chapter. Meanwhile, stellar defense by Simonsen and Anaiah Jenkins helped keep Longwood off the board for the first four minutes of the fourth. The Highlanders led by as many as 23 halfway through the fourth. The Lancers managed to get a little closer but not close enough to make a difference, with the Highlanders cruising to a 78-63 triumph.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"This is a fantastic win," said Head Coach Mike McGuire after the game. "One we really needed. I think our girls won the game with great play. I think for the most part we executed the game plan. We understood what their strengths were, how we needed to score. For the most part, we did a good job with that. This is a good win. Not really a must win, but one we wanted to have."

UP NEXT
