Jones Leads Radford Tying Career High in Points for Dominant Win Over Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. – Radford earned a dominant Big South victory Wednesday night over Presbyterian 80-61 thanks to Del Jones tying his career high in points with 27 on 10 made shots from the field.
 
KEY STATS
  • Jones is the second Highlander this season to connect on 10 made shots this season, four from beyond the arc, to tie his career-high of 27 points.
  • Dennis Parker Jr. stayed hot with 22 points with Jaylon Johnson scoring 13. The trio of Parker Jr., Johnson and Jones have scored 10 or more points in both of Radford's Big South wins so far.
  • The Blue Hose out rebounded the Highlanders and won the second chance points battle 13-5, but Radford's difference marker came with connecting on eight more threes.
  • Radford finished an even 50% shooting overall on the night, also hitting on 14 of their 16 trips to the charity stripe.
  • Radford is off to a 2-0 start in Big South play for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
The first half saw Radford and Presbyterian trading buckets with the Highlanders unable to break open their slim lead. Johnson, Lukas Walls and Tyson Brown got the scoring started but Presbyterian had an answer at each point along the way keeping the game tied at 9-9.
 
Jones got his big game started with four straight points followed by an and-one from Parker Jr., as Radford held a 14-13 lead at the 12:51 mark. Parker Jr. would add five more points scoring eight straight for the Highlanders to establish a 21-16 advantage. The two squads went back to trading buckets, winding up with a 36-29 Radford lead with two minutes left in the half. Presbyterian scored seven straight including a three at the buzzer, however, to even the game at 36-36 for halftime.
 
Radford's offense ignited in the second half as Jones wouldn't miss. After Parker Jr. got the scoring started, Jones connected on a floater and two three-pointers to vault Radford up 48-40. Johnson added to the deep hits with a three of his own followed by made shots from Johnson and Parker Jr. The hot shooting from Radford's main scoring trio gave Radford its first commanding lead of the game 57-47 with 13:30 on the clock.
 
Shots were hard to come by for a four-minute stretch from there, but threes from Jones and Frederik Erichsen helped keep the lead intact. Out of a well-placed timeout, Jones connected on another three kicking off a 12-0 run that sunk the Blue Hose.
 
Parker Jr. provided six straight points followed by a three-point dagger from Lukas Walls that gave Radford its biggest lead of the night at 75-56. Jones would cap the game with one more and-one to push his point total to 27 as the Highlanders defended Dedmon to the tune of a big 80-61 victory.
 
AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • UNC Asheville picked up their first Big South win over Longwood 72-61with four players in double figures scoring including Kameron Taylor's 24 points off the bench.
  • High Point opened with a massive lead over Gardner-Webb early and never looked back, winning 104-49 and moving to 3-0 in conference.
  • Winthrop came back from down six with six minutes play to hand Charleston Southern its first conference loss 81-77.
 
UP NEXT
Radford will look to keep UNC Asheville from going 2-0 against teams in the Commonwealth of Virginia this week when the team returns to Dedmon this upcoming Saturday, January 10th. The game is set for a 2:30 p.m. tip and will stream live on ESPN+.
