Radford Opens the 2026 Season Strong with a Shutout Win at Home

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders opened up the season at home Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win vs the Iona Gaels. The pitching shined, highlighted by a combined shutout led by Daniel Quintana's five innings.
 
Raymond Ladd returned to the mound for the first time since March 1st, 2025, throwing two innings and giving up two hits on eight batters. Quintana started his Highlanders career strong, coming in relief of Ladd in the third inning. Quintana's five scoreless innings on 18 batters, two walks, and four strikeouts led to him earning the win for the Highlanders.

Self opened the scoring for the Highlanders with a triple in the bottom of the sixth to give the Highlanders the winning run as Devin Parks scored from first base. Toole would go on to hit a triple of his own in the bottom of the seventh inning. Toole would score with help from a ground out by Hunter Keen to extend the lead for the Highlanders 2-0.

Joshua Milleville came in the ninth inning to close out the game for the Highlanders, recording the save for the 2-0 victory.
 
This marks the first shutout for the Highlanders since April 16th, 2022, vs High Point 3-0 on the road (1399 days), and the first home shutout since March 26th, 2019, vs Appalachian State 5-0 (2516 days).
 
UP NEXT
The Highlanders will continue to play tomorrow against the Gaels in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., the second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to follow shortly.
