Radford Splits the Doubleheader but Takes the Opening Series vs Iona

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders (2-1) continued their opening series Saturday, February 14th, splitting their pair of games with the Iona Gaels (1-2). Led by Devin Parks' seven hits and four RBI in the newcomers' breakout performance, Radford was able to take the series vs the Gaels with their win in the second game 6-3.

GAME ONE
Parks would open up the scoring for the Highlanders with a double to center field in the bottom of the second put Radford behind just 3-1. This would be Parks' first hit and RBI as a Highlander. Noah Toole would ground out to the pitcher later in the inning with Parks advancing from third to score bring the score to 3-2 for the Gaels.

In the bottom of the third, Parks would come up big again, hitting a three-run triple down the left field line to give the Highlanders the lead 5-3. Carrington Aaron would come in, hitting a line drive off the pitcher's glove, going to second, who made the play at first for the out, scoring Parks on the play. That brough the lead to 6-3.

The Gaels would continue to fight, bringing the game back to even at 7-7 at the top of the seventh.

Toole would go on to hit Mason Self in to give the Highlanders back the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7. The Gaels would score two runs in the top of the ninth, however, seeing the first game slip away 9-8 in Iona's favor.

GAME TWO
Andrew Steinhaus would take the mound for Radford, going six innings with five strikeouts and one earned run in his first outing of the season. This effort by Steinhaus would go on to secure the win to start his 2026 campaign 1-0.

After a slower start to the game for the Highlanders' two-way player, Breckin Nace would get the Highlanders on the board with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth, leaving the score tied 2-2.

Hunter Keen would continue the scoring run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly scoring Toole to give the Highlanders the lead 3-2.

Nace would come in to relieve Steinhaus going the remaining three innings. Nace gave up just one run on two hits with three strikeouts. This strong showing by Nace would lead to him recording the save for the Highlanders.

Aaron extended the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a one-run double, scoring Self to make the score 4-2. Brady Powell would hit into a fielder's choice with Aaron and Parks scoring to end the inning with the lead 6-2.

A late push by Iona in the eighth would see them scoring one more run to bring the final score of the game 6-3 for the Highlanders.
