Baseball Powers Through Queens for Win on the Road

BOX SCORE CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford Highlanders pitched by committee and trounced the Royals early on Tuesday afternoon, 11-2, for their first road win on the season.
 
Devin Parks would open the game with a walk, continuing his on-base streak to start the year. With help from a passed ball and a stolen base, Parks would end up in scoring position at third base. Breckin Nace would come in, hitting a groundout to short, scoring Parks giving the Highlanders the lead 1-0.

Luke Sullivan would get things started for the Highlanders at the top of the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Brady Powell. Junho Son would continue to keep things going with a home run to right center field to extend the lead for the Highlanders to 4-0.

The Highlanders would make a pitching change at the bottom of the fourth, taking Matthew Lefevers out after a strong three innings of work. Lefevers would end the day facing 10 batters, on two hits, shutting out the side. Parker Noonan would then make his debut for the Highlanders.

Noah Toole would open up the top of the fifth inning for the Highlanders with a one-out walk. Following him would be Nace, hitting an opposite-field double to leave two runners in scoring position. Powell would come to the plate, hitting a two-run RBI single to widen the gap to 6-1 for the Highlanders.

Son would open the sixth inning with a walk, followed by another walk by Toole to have two runners on base. Nace would come to the plate, hitting a ground ball to the second baseman, forcing a tough play that resulted in a throwing error. Son would score on the play to bring the score to 7-1 for the Highlanders.

Noonan would go a total of two innings for the Highlanders, facing nine batters. Noonan would surrender one run on three hits for his first action of the season. Eli Baker would follow Noonan on the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning for his first time in a Highlanders jersey.

Powell would get things started at the top of the seventh by working a walk in a 3-2 count. Powell would next advance to second on a passed ball, then continued to be aggressive by stealing third on the very next play. Mason Self would then step up securing an RBI single to increase the lead to 8-1. Carrington Aaron would step up to the plate, forcing an error by the shortstop, scoring Self on the play to end the inning 9-1 for the Highlanders.

Baker would finish the day pitching a total of two innings in an impressive showing. He would face the minimum six batters, throwing 14 of his 17 pitches for a strike. Baker included two strikeouts and paved the way for Will Palmer in the bottom of the eighth. 

The Highlanders would keep the line moving in the top of the ninth, starting with Alex Levesque singling up the middle for his first hit as a Highlander. Son would get on base with a walk, followed by Aaron loading the bases with a hit by pitch. Parks would open the score even further by hitting a single and advancing to second on a 2-run hit to bring the lead to 11-1.

Palmer's day for the Highlanders would conclude with one inning of work facing one batter with one hit on two strikeouts. The game would be finished by Ben Keefe and Trey Ludy as the score went final 11-2 for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders will look to keep things rolling, hosting the Bucknell Bison for a three-game series at home beginning Friday, February 20th, through Sunday, February 22nd. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 3:00 p.m. in Radford, Va. The Sunday game at 1:00 p.m. will be broadcast on ESPN+.
