Softball Looks Strong, Earns Doubleheader Split Against Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program bounced back in a big way afternoon and looked strong in a pair of challenging games at Liberty earning a 3-0 victory before coming up just short via walk-off in game two in a 5-4 loss.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders used clutch hitting and elite pitching performance from Dakota Redmon to get back in the win column. It was a quiet start on both ends as Radford was retired in order in the first and Redmon worked around an error for a 0-0 score through the first. After back-to-back outs in the second, Radford got its first big hit of the game.

Both Grace Hogie and Abby Bossler drew walks to put a pair on the paths. Hailey Scott placed a ground ball in a tough spot to the short stop and, after Bossler was able to get into second safely, Hogie never stopped running and took home for the 1-0 lead. Redmon would respond with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the lead.

Radford got some breathing room in the third thanks to some more clutch two-out hitting. After Amanda Lee walked and stole second, with two outs Amber Wolfe laced an RBI single to center to score Lee for the 2-0 lead.

While the offense was quiet until the seventh, Redmon locked things down. The Flames had no answers in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as Redmon retired nine straight in a big bounce back performance.

In the seventh, Radford got one more big insurance run once again with two outs in the inning. Myla Russell would begin the inning with a pinch-hit walk and was replaced on the bases by Grace Bechtol. After a sacrifice bunt, Bechtol moved to second and then to third on a groundout. A throwing error allowed Bechtol to come home, and Radford led 3-0.

Other than the Flames getting their second hit of the night in the bottom of the seventh, Redmon faced no issues retiring the side to close out her first shutout of the season. The 3-0 win for Radford was their first over Liberty since 2018, and their first win in Lynchburg since 2017.

GAME TWO
Following in Redmon's footsteps, Morgan Cooper was electric in the circle for the Highlanders as well in game two. After rolling up a double play to start the game in the first, the offense backed her up starting in the second.

Hogie stayed hot at the plate singling and moving to second on a wild pitch. A single by Feigen would put runners on the corners. Bossler had the big RBI hit, a loud single to right center that gave Radford a 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners again, Radford performed a double steal to perfection, drawing attention away from Miles who took home for a 2-0 lead.

Cooper went back to work and was untouched in the second and third frames. The Flames would score their first run of the day with a solo homer in the fourth, but Radford still led 2-1 and would add to it in the fifth.

With Bechtol on third and Lee at first, Liberty made a pitching change with Groves stepping to the plate. Groves wasted no time and crushed a double to deep right center that easily scored two and put Radford ahead further 4-1.

Liberty would threaten again in the bottom of the fifth with runners on the corners and one out. Cooper navigated through it seamlessly, inducing a lineout to first and striking out the last batter to preserve the lead. Cooper was also solid in the sixth, but the Flames found their stride in the seventh.

After a single and a double to lead off the inning, the Flames scored two on a bloop double to right. The Flames next batter roped a home run to left and flipped the script on the Highlanders, walking off the second game for a 5-4 final and sneaking out with the doubleheader split.
