Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nice’s Heroics Not Enough as Highlanders Fall to Longwood in Overtime

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team (15-10, 7-3 BSC) overcame a late deficit and managed to force an extra five minutes but ultimately fell to Longwood 88-73 in overtime at the Joan Perry Brock Center on Wednesday night.
Down by three with five ticks left, Angelina Nice just beat the buzzer and sank a three-pointer to tie things at 69-69 and force overtime. However, the Lancers finished on a 19-4 run to crush the Highlanders in the extra period.

KEY STATS
  • Shooting in the overtime period decided the game, with Longwood making three of their first four shots, including a couple of threes. Radford went 1-for-15 from the floor and 0-for-7 from deep in overtime.
  • Longwood dominated the rebounding battle 53-34, although Radford grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and beat the Lancers in second chance points.
  • Georgia Simonsen tallied 14 first-half points and finished with 17 to lead the team.
  • The Highlanders won the turnover battle in a sloppy contest, 24-19.
  • Nice ended one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders got off to a slow start but managed to keep things close to prevent a large deficit early. Cate Carlson broke the seal with a three-pointer to make it a 4-3 game a couple minutes in. Simonsen scored next to get the deficit down to a point with 6:51 left in the first. After the Lancers put in a four-point spurt, Radford responded to tie it up as things went back-and-forth. A late drive by Ellie Taylor led to Kirah Dandridge to get open underneath, as the senior beat the first quarter clock to give the Highlanders a 16-14 advantage after one.

The offenses continued at breakneck pace in the second quarter. Longwood's Malea Brown, who was kept quiet in the meeting a few weeks ago at the Dedmon Center, scored 14 points in just over five minutes in the second quarter, helping give the Lancers a 34-26 lead. After a timeout, Simonsen got going underneath, generating space and sinking baskets in the paint. She tied it after hitting a pair of free throws at 34-34 with just under two minutes left in the first half. A late Longwood basket gave the Lancers a two-point cushion at the break.

The offenses ground down to a halt in the third quarter, with the first made field goal coming two and a half minutes in thanks to a putback by Anaiah Jenkins. Radford fell behind by a couple possessions but battled back with Taylor's layup getting the Highlanders within a point midway through the quarter. Longwood found success underneath, getting high percentage looks underneath to push the lead back to seven. Jenkins got another score before the end of the third to cut the deficit back to 52-47.

Joi Williams hit her first three-pointer with 6:58 remaining in the fourth in what felt like it could be a turning point for the Highlanders. Instead, Longwood went on a 9-3 run over several minutes and kept Radford from hitting a shot, pushing their lead to 10 points with 2:48 left in regulation. A basket by Simonsen, stop on the defensive end, and three-pointer by Williams halved the hole to five with 2:15 left. However, Longwood continued to get trips to the line and hit free throws. Carlson hit a three to keep Radford alive down four with 1:04 remaining, then the visitors caught a break when Longwood's Jasmine Peaks missed one of her two free throws with 51 seconds left. A couple free throws by Williams got the deficit to one possession, and a turnover resulting from a bad Longwood pass set up the Highlanders with a chance to tie with 19 seconds remaining. Williams and Carlson both missed their three-point attempts, but a second offensive rebound by Nice made it a one-point game with five seconds left. Despite Longwood making a couple free throws, Nice went the length of the court to hit a stunning buzzer-beater to force overtime.
