Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Highlanders Hang Tough, Ultimately Fall at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford men's basketball program hung tough but ultimately came up short despite a late rally at High Point Saturday night, dropping the contest 86-77.

KEY STATS
  • Dennis Parker Jr. led Radford's scoring efforts with 24 points on 10 makes from the floor, just missing a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • The turnover battle didn't play in Radford's favor tonight as the team fell to it 19-14, but did force the most turnovers by High Point since November.
  • Fouls were aplenty in the contest and the Panthers used it to their advantage shooting 20% better and collecting 13 more points from the free throw line.
  • Jaylon Johnson also colored in the stat sheet with 17 points, a trio of assists and two steals. Del Jones led Radford's assists department with five.

PLAY BY PLAY
It was a back-and-forth affair at the start as Parker Jr. started his strong night by scoring Radford's first eight points. At the 13:28 mark, Radford kicked off a 6-0 run behind makes from Del Jones, Frederik Erichsen and Tyson Brown to lead 14-13. After a Panthers 8-0 run, Radford bounced back with seven straight as Parker Jr. scored five more points.

A three by Jaylon Johnson lifted Radford back up 28-27, but after a Panthers' three the hosts would hold their lead until the break. Johnson sunk another three and Parker Jr. dropped a strong and-one before the half ended to keep Radford behind by just a shot at 39-37.

It was a sluggish start to the second half for Radford as a layup from Parker Jr. accounted for all of the team's offense through the first four minutes. Shaking off that start, Radford ripped a 10-2 run behind threes from Brennan Rigsby Jr. and Johnson to retake their first lead of the second half at 49-47.

With 14:13 to play, Radford's offense was stifled allowing High Point to claw back with a 7-0 run. The Highlanders battled back, but as fouls mounted both teams headed to the free throw line often over the final 10 minutes. That free throw battle was largely won by the Panthers, who used the charity stripe to hold their lead throughout.

Radford put a scare in the home crowd with under four minutes to go as a 5-0 run kicked off by a Rigsby Jr. layup pulled the game within two possessions. A Parker Jr. triple pulled the game within one shot at 74-77 with 2:18 to play and another triple from Johnson made it just 77-79 with 1:13 to go.

That three-pointer from Johnson would mark the Highlanders last made shot of the night, though, as High Point would go on to put the game away with free throws. Over the final minute, the Panthers ended the game on a 7-0 run all at the free throw line to hold on in the 86-77 final.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Presbyterian came back from a first half deficit to claim a road victory over Gardner-Webb 68-62
  • USC Upstate and Charleston Southern went to overtime with the Spartans earning the 100-94 win with three players scoring 20+ points.
  • Winthrop hung on in another tight battle late against Longwood, avenging their earlier season loss for a 79-74 victory.
