Bell’s Six Goals Not Enough in Radford’s One Score Loss at Howard

WASHINGTON – Freshman Ashlyn Bell etched her name in the Highlander record books with a tremendous individual effort to score six goals, but the Radford women's lacrosse team dropped their fourth contest of the season in an 11-10 defeat to the Howard Bison at Greene Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

KEY STATS
  • Ashlyn Bell scored six goals, including two game-tying tallies in the second half. The freshman from Tampa, Fla. Is the eighth Highlander to score at least six times in a single game in program history.
  • Radford battled back after an early deficit to even the score several times in the second half.
  • Ava LaManna made 11 saves, finishing the day with a .500 save percentage. She made some crucial stops on two free position shot attempts in the contest. Her 247 career saves puts her in third on the all-time saves list in Radford history.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Bison got going first, scoring twice in the first five minutes. They then parked the bus with tons of defenders back, snuffing out many scoring opportunities for the Highlanders. LaManna stepped up at the defensive end, making three saves and keeping Radford within two goals after one.

Bell got Radford on the board with a shot from out in front finding the back of the net to cut the early deficit in half. Howard scored right back, then added another with a man-up to make it 3-1 halfway through the second. Bell got back to business with two more goals, the second from a nice feed by Evie Gee, to get within one again. A quick response by the Bison made it 5-3, which is the score at the horn for halftime.

Gee got things going for Radford with a goal to start the second half, and Aleese Warner added another just a few moments later to tie it at 5-5. Maddie Driscoll scored again to answer Howard's tally to make it 6-6, then Gee scored despite being a man down to answer again and tie it at 7-7. A late shot attempt by Driscoll almost gave Radford their first lead, but Howard made the save to keep it tied after three.

The teams traded quick scores to start the fourth and keep things tied 8-8. The Bison scored next and broke down the field after winning the succeeding draw control to make it a two-goal lead with under 10 minutes left. Despite being a player down after some cards, Bell scored for the sixth time with 4:07 left to give Radford a shot. The Bison got and scored on a free position attempt with 2:29 on the clock, but Maggie Wisniewski answered from a free position to make it again a one-goal deficit with just 1:31 left. Howard won the draw, but the Highlanders forced a turnover and had a chance to tie it and force overtime. Bell tried for her seventh goal, but the shot sailed high with 14 seconds left to finish the game at 11-10.
